Ditto. I tried everything, finally had to resort to the poison.

we used a similar method for mice except we used coarse ground cornmeal and cement--we mixed it up and put it out in little bowls--didn't take long for the mice to chomp away at the grit and then we had no more mice problems--i agree that the method for killing is that the mixture hardens in the gut and is like a blockage--it evidently also makes them thristy and when they drink water it only adds to the problem of the hardening process--we had no mice actually die in the building so there was no smell either--nice!

I am glad this thread came back up...........considering all the other things we have done to kill rats.

I think most of our current problem is coming from the pair of falling down garages, both ours and the neighbors. We tried using instant mashed potatoes and bowls of water for the same effect.

As far as the poster that suggested coyote pee to ward off ground squirrels, lol they have clearly not lived with coyotes and ground squirrels! I have photos of the dogs and the coyotes peeing in the squirrel holes. Trust me, they squirrels do not care!

Add to the many things they like to destroy-anything rubber on your cars engine! And they have no worries about building their tunnels near people. I have 2 holes in this apt building complex courtyard! They are undermining carports, driveways and very important banks that keep the buildings from shifting. When you watch on the news homes falling in to the sea in CA from bluffs..........look for the maze of squirrel holes that helped the ground to become unstable. The squirrels do not cause the ocean to erode the bluff, but they sure do help it speed it up!

I have a question. If the rats balls dehydrate the rats & shut down all that stuff how is it different then D Con? Ive heard from several people that DCon dehydrates the same way as plaster of Paris & its an EXTREMELY painful way to die.

Most poisons contain an anticoagulant so they basically bleed to death internally. Neither way is a good way to die, but none died for me with the plaster of paris baits...they just pooped white rat turds..... so I switched to the poison after nothing else worked to get rid of them.

every now and then when the rats start increasing I just put a hose on my pump and put a little water in their runs tunnels as they come out I shoot them with the pellet rifle most weeks I just put lye in their runs the lye gets on their feet and they lick it off and die

Your rat balls sound just like our Coyote / raccoon balls. most of the bigger predators gulp their food. we found a nice treat for them in the form of a chopped up Car wash sponge rolled on bacon grease.
1. large car wash sponge cut up into 2" x 2-3" squares.
2. Cotton Kite string. it has to be cotton so the acid in the critters stomach can break it down.
3. Bacon grease/hamburger grease chicken grease what ever...

Take your chunk of sponge (dry) and squeeze it down into a tight ball while you carefully wrap it with the kite string(don't over do it). once down about the size of a nickle or slightly larger roll it in the grease of your choice. coat liberally.
as for how they work the cotton string should be broken up by digestion. the sponge reopens to its original size and a short time later you have a dead predator( blocked colons suck).
as a rule of thumb I don't use these unless I have seen the coyotes in my yard. I find they follow the deer trails out behind the back fence and the best traveled trails is your best bet for a pick up. to prevent you own animals getting them put them out in the evening and if they don't get picked over night pick them up and redeploy them later. Happy hunting.

This solution is brilliant. My one question is, how long should it take? We've put the mixture out there at least 5 times this week. Every morning, it's gone. But every morning, it's gone! I would think it should have already taken effect. I was wondering how long others have kept it up before finally seeing a change? We're also covering the ground holes every night after placing out the PB so we can see where -- and if -- the fresh digging is happening.
