I went outside earlier and caught the neighbors son in my Barred Rock pen! He was taking an egg! I yelled at him, he dropped the egg, I told him he was not to be in the pens and to not come back on our property again. I don't think he will but I will be locking all the coops from now on. Sad thing is, I offer them eggs all the time!

If you offer them eggs. I dont see why he would take some. Unless he thought it was ok because you did give them eggs.. I dont know.

Maybe you should talk with his parents and have him work off eggs if he wants them so bad. Like clean the coop. Or even just feed and water the birds for you.. In exchange for eggs. Or have him gather eggs for you in exchange for a few.

Just an idea

But I would have been mad seeing some one in my coop too..

How old is this boy? Maybe he was just curious? Perhaps you can teach him about your chickens and the work involved. Let him help you feed and water them? He probably meant no harm.....teach him and he'll love to learn about them. Chase him off and he'll likely sneak around and who knows what.

That's bizarre that he would come over without asking or anything! Boy would I be angry if someone went in my coop.

And I'm not easily angered--but just, don't mess with my birds!

I agree with some of the above posters--act based on his age. If he's younger, he could definitely just be curious and it would be a good opportunity to teach him about chickens and eggs and give him a chance to get involved in some capacity maybe. If he's older, that just seems weird to me and I'd be more concerned. Regardless of his age, I'd talk to his parents about it.

If he's a young kid, I am thinking his mom told him she needed another egg and said go get me one. You give them eggs so she'd probably figure you wouldn't mind giving up another one. Not right but I know how parents send their kids to do things, they don't have the nerve to do themselves.

Okay so I've tried that years ago with my son, not with eggs tho. I wanted him to liberate an item put out for garbage day. Ya know, he wouldn't do it. To this day (he's 24) if the grocery store has a limit of one per customer and I ask him to get one for me - he wont. Of course he has always felt I do very "stupid" things like cut out coupons.
