No one told me...

We brought six chicks home on March 17. On July 17 we got our first egg and she’s given one per day ever since. We’re up to four laying now, and averaging 2.6 eggs per day. Yes, I have a spreadsheet complete with a graph, tracking my producers. There are still two chickens who aren’t quite ready, but we’re pleased so far.
Are you weighing the eggs? We did that for a while, till we felt the size was up to par. It was good to track it; no guessing.

When I start getting eggs, I think I might just jot down how many eggs per day I get. I do like the idea of graphing the egg output, so I could see the changes from month to month, or season to season. That is a good idea.

Each chicken has a color in the six columns on the right side of the spreadsheet. Those colors are mimicked on the graph showing who is laying the most. The first couple of weeks was pretty boring when only one chicken was laying. Now, with just two more chickens yet to join the game, the first layer’s segment is getting a little smaller.

How do you know which hen is laying eggs? Do you have them in separate cages? I have a small backyard flock of 10 birds, which are not yet laying, but when they do I don't know how I could tell which bird gave an egg for that day, or not.

...I'D BE SO EXCITED FOR OUR 1ST EGG! Did a flock check when I got home this afternoon and found this perfect little egg hiding behind the nest boxes :D Raising chicks was such a fun experience, but it's so great to see all the hard work pay off!

Just curious, how old are your birds? I am still looking forward to my first egg and think/hope it will not be very long.

I also have a flock of 10 - I know which of my two have started laying because of their behavior in the coop in the a.m. (in and out of nest boxes, extra chatty) but once the others start laying it will get more difficult I'm sure. I'd love to know how @michaelbell317 and others keep track of who's laying as well!
