No Ordinance. Still told to get rid of them! MICH.

Hey Old Guy43- I AM on the ballot this fall!!! Running for Village Council!
Atta Girl.
That's gotta have 'em worried.
My chickens died on my in-laws farm. They had never been separated before, and when a dog got one of them, the other died soon after of natural causes (stress?).
I am so sorry.

Just reading this thread for the first time today.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm also sorry for the officials that you have had to deal with.

Too bad you can't somehow hold them accountable for your loss, the lives of those animals, whose deaths they essentially caused. :(

Wish me luck with the planning commission tonight!

I hope they listen to me when I say things like:

Chicken Coops should provide each chicken with more than 1 sqft. of space per hen. (duh...most standards are larger than 1 sqft themselves!)

That storing manure in a compost for instance is one of the perks of raising hens - fertilizer for your garden!

That hens should have times to roam a fenced yard, provided that fence is at the very least 4 ft in height (average height I've research that a chicken should not easily fly over). And that free ranging in a fenced yard provides a broader diet for the hens and better insect control for your yard and garden.

Don't let the term "backyard" fool you. Using the zoning ordinance, many peoples backyards are very small and will not fit the criteria.
The Village allows you to fence in area's beyond your technical "backyard" and use this area as a "backyard" but in reality it is not.
I for instance live on a corner and even though they gave me a fencing permit for a large of of my property, including putting 2"X4" farm fencing right on a property line next to Village property that does not have a sidewalk, that area is my "front yard" , the majority of my yard is technically "front yard", since I'm on a corner.

There was an old proclamation of some sort that actually encouraged ALL americans to have chickens. Wish i could remember where i saw it. It may have been an old wartime poster.. possibly on Antiques roadshow?
