No Ordinance. Still told to get rid of them! MICH.

Keep fighting, you can beat City Hall! When I lived in CA. back in the 80s, I raised rabbits for food. I also had a very nasty neighbor that would use any excuse to cause me trouble, and did. He was well known with the police as a pest, so he called in Animal Control about my rabbits. The officer came out and said my neighbor told him I had 100 rabbits in my garage. At the time, I believe the legal limit was like 14 rabbits. I asked the officer if the stature said anything about baby rabbits? Do they count as rabbits, or is it more like puppies and kittens? A dog or a cat was not considered a dog or cat until it was at least 8 weeks old. I told him how many adults I had (12), and that each doe probably had at least 8 babies with her, what was I to do? Kill all the babies by taking them away from their food source, the mothers?? He just looked at me and said he would see what he could do, that made total sense to him. He came back the next day, and asked me how long it took for them to be self relient or useable. I told him I didn't wish to sell these animals, my family and neighbors used them as a food source, so 12 weeks. Because there had been nothing on the books as to how old they had to be to be considered a "rabbit", I got it written in that the babies could stay until they were 12 weeks old! Boy, was my nasty neighbor HOT when he found that one out!!

So hang in there, it can be done! Get petitions from your community and go to the council meetings and get others to go too! This is still America, and you have the right to be heard and respected!

Thanks! That was a good one! I <3 rabbits too! I can't believe that the government ever has a right to keep citizens from producing their own food. Chickens, rabbits, veggies, seems like a basic human right to me.

I can understand when these animals actually infringe on the rights of others; such as the ability to sleep at night w/o a rooster going off at all hours. However, those problems are NOT what we are talking about here in this thread. A few hens or some rabbits are simply not a problem. In both cases, most reasonable people (neighbors) are glad to have them next door.

I wish people would be more tolerant and less pushy of their particular political, religious, etc views on others. We are a nation founded on individual freedom and respect for beliefs different then our own.

Live and let live.

your removal of the hens is akin to capitulating to an ordinance that does not exist.

No ordinance means it's perfectly legal.

Really nice article, so congrats on that! And love your coop! It was good of your neighbor to speak up on behalf of your chickens, too. I would call the paper and ask them to do a follow up story next week about the verbage of the ordinance. It is written in such a way that any activity that isnt specifically permitted could be deemed at any point to be prohibited and that should be a real concern for everyone in your town!

Good luck. You have moral support all over the nation!

Meaning no offense James, but it is obvious that you have never lived next to a railroad track or under the flight path of a civilian or military airport. Having done all three please allow me to assure you that after about 3 days or a week at most you become acclimated and sleep through the night. When compared to those things a rooster crowing at dawn is nothing.

One more point I would like to make. Roosters do not normally "go off at all hours." Like the hens they go to sleep at sunset and only crow at sunrise.

Then what of the posts on this forum of people stating how their roosters might crow in the middle of the night because of a car driving by? Or something else happens that wakes them, and they decide to crow just because they can? My one hen that turned out to be a cockeral had to be rehomed because he was crowing at 4am.. well before our 7:30am sunrise at the time.

Not to get all off topic here, but my rooster actually DOES "go off" at all hours! If there was a memo about only crowing at sunrise he sure didn't get it!

He crows whenever the mood strikes, all..day...long. He has also been known to crow at 2:00 a.m. on moonlit nights as well as other unheard of hours especially if something disturbs their sleep. During the day, it's frequent from sun up to sun down.

Keep up the good work! The article put you in a very positive light. I would, however, make sure any future pictures include your children looking adorable and you looking very pregnant. I think it makes them seem like even bigger bad guys if they're picking on a nice pregnant lady and her cute children.

Just a thought.....

Also, I agree with the sentiment that you need to get the chickens back home. That way you can be grandfathered in if they do pass an ordinance against them.

Good evening Mamma to be- I hope this day is finding you well. I am thinking about coming to your town just to check out this whole situation. I am going to be going from house to house, looking for violations and bring it to the city councils attention!!!! I love doing things on a principal basis. I am hoping you get your chickens back home soon. When is this adorable baby due?
