We've gotten our first weirdo no-shelled egg--on the same day as a quail-sized egg, from our dozen girls who have been increasing their laying as the days get warmer. They get calcium and ground up shells free choice, and there is no evidence of disease. I assume this may be because my 4-year old was chasing them and holding them yesterday--I'm unclear on what amount of repetitive "forced love" is ok for chickens. But my main question is, can we eat the no-shelled egg? It had a little poop on the outside, and I'm thinking there is less barrier to infection without the shell.

Thanks!

I don't eat those. If it's in tact, you could scramble it and feed to the chickens or dogs. You'll be getting nice eggs as they get the hang of it!

Not sure if I would eat it but that's just my opinion. But as far as the egg itself if your chickens are getting layer feed and free choice oyster shells it's probably that their just new layers especially with you getting a little tiny egg too. I've gotten a few of each and mine just starting laying at the end of Jan...

Everything eventually straightened out with them!!

I had a super tiny dark chocolate brown egg to day with a shell that was squooshy! But the chickens had already cracked it .. it was adorable, though! It's okay to eat them! It's very fun to eat "Tiny" scrambled eggs! lol

If the no shell is just a thin shell that wasn't dirty or outside for long, I may eat it, depends on how shell less it was. Tiny eggs with regular shells just get scrambled with the rest.

Thanks, everybody! We left the no shelled egg out on the counter, and this morning it was so desiccated that it had collapsed...so we did not eat it. The tiny one will be fun, however.

Update: we cracked the tiny egg and it was white, tiny bit of yolk, and a big ol' meat spot, about the size of my pinky-nail, and quite round. I'm sure it's fine to eat, but ick!

Nope, I thought about it...and couldnt do it. I'm sure it will be good for the compost!

Question, if you feed chickens scrambled eggs, couldn't it make it more likely for them to turn into egg-eaters?

As long as you're not cracking open eggs in front of them or give them raw/runny eggs, they probably won't be able to put one and one together.

I've had hens devour eggs I've dropped on the floor, but haven't had any of them become egg eaters from it, I just wouldn't make that egg dropping a habit. LOL
