I think there definitely are rude NON smokers as well, so this really does go both ways. I think everyone just needs to be considerate of everyone else

Well said, there are plenty of smokers who are considerate of others, I never ever stood right outside a door to smoke, but the stupid walmart we go to - puts the darn ash bucket thing right smack between the entry and exit - RIGHT outside their door so a smoker HAS to walk there to put the smoke out - really stupid on their part. I bet alot of places do that. And I wasn't one to just drop my cigarette and leave it there, even stepping on it and leaving it there wasn't in my book, if I HAD to put my smoke out I would do so when it was still long enough that I could step on the end, pull off the butt part and find a trash can!

I never EVER threw a cigarette out my car window, I always kept an old soda bottle or can in my car with a little liquid in it and put my cigarette in that. Its imposible to put a cigarette out by stubbing it while you're driving, so liquid in a container was my choice. But a friend of mine used a container with sand to stub out her smoke.

I see smokers all the time giving the rest of them a bad name, sometimes, like with walmarts ash bucket so close to the door, it wasn't really thier fault. But I also walked right past a cigarette in the parking lot, still lit just lying on the ground. That annoys me. The trick is to educate the smokers, not BAN them!

I am continually amazed that people fail to realize that EACH TIME that they support a Government Regulation to limit what someone else does, they are building a foundation for limiting their own choices of how they choose to live.

It is ultimately "self-defeating".

Where is the simple "common-sense" of courtesy, manners, empathy ? Are not these preferable to Government-DICTATED edicts?

Use a "surrogate" (Government) to attack your neighbor....and eventually....
The "surrogate" will attack YOU !!! (whether instigated by your neighbor or not)

It is FOOLISH and "short-sighted".

I totally agree with the people who say that smokers should NOT be smoking in public areas. Go share the "glory" or your cancer on a stick somewhere else!!!!

I don't want to breath in rat poison, tar, and other DISGUSTING things that are in cigarettes!

If people want to put that in their body, then go ahead; but don't bring it over to the non-smoker side.

Yes I agree that it's not good to limit our choices, but if people weren't so ignorant and chose by themselves to not make other people breathe in their smoke, then there wouldn't have to be restrictions on free choices people make and people who don't enjoy the smell of smoke wouldn't have to complain about it. That simple. But, people still just HAVE to bring their cigarettes to public places.

A walmart parking lot is not a public place, it is a place of business owned by a number of individuals. If they didn't want smoking in their parking lots, they'd do something about it.

For those who want more government control, I implore you into looking into Venezuela. I hear Hugo Chavez is looking for a few good peeps

Cali has been like this for awhile. I dont care if people smoke just do it away from the entrance of the doors. Like take a short walk away from where my kids are breathing. Then please puff away to you cant puff anymore! It can work for us both that way but some people are ignorant like that. I see them in their cars, windows up and kids in the back. Nice parents! Some states that is against the law. Wish it was here. But you cant smoke in the house or car with foster kids here in florida.

I have absolutely ZERO tolerance for people smoking in public, inside or outside. That said, this seems to be a conversation that is always pointless because smokers (some smokers, not all) do not like to take responsibility for their actions. You are not just hurting yourself, you are hurting OTHER PEOPLE. I, for the life of me, cannot understand what is so difficult to fathom. Of course, if you disagree, that is FINE. We do not all have to agree (my husband and I disagree several times a day, LOL).

The differences between smoking and other things listed as examples are so obvious, it is laughable. Nobody FORCES a soda down another person's throat! When you smoke in public, OTHER PEOPLE are forced to inhale as well. What is so difficult to understand? As far as the government regulating it, they should. The government regulates all sorts of dangerous behaviors. Another example that I have heard ad nauseam is the example of drunk driving (not here yet). The government does regulate alcohol and drunk driving! If that is a good example (which it isn't), why don't we impose the same penalties on public smoking as drunk driving? Yeah, I didn't think you would like that. LOL.

There are so many things I hate about smoking, I could write a book, but I will refrain from saying some of what I truly feel. I actually quit a job because I was the only non-smoker there. Even just the lack of productivity smoking causes in the workplace is horrendous. I have worked with smokers that once an hour need to, "run outside just to grab a 'quick' smoke". A quick smoke is generally at least 15 minutes. At the place I used to work, the smokers would disappear outside IN A GROUP and be gone smoking and chit-chatting for sometimes several minutes at a time leaving me completely alone to run the business. As with any ADDICTION, smokers are sometimes oblivious to their actions and how they harm other people. When challenged on it, they often get angry because, again, it is an ADDICTION.

You are forcing other people to be subject to your addiction against their will. The only way a logical parallel could be made to some of the other things listed is if someone forced you to partake. As I said, nobody walks by you and pours a soda down your throat. No heroin user walks by you and shoots you up with heroin. We all know smoking is just as deadly. In fact, it probably kills more than most of the other addictions combined. Nearly every person in my family that has passed did so because of cancer (several of lung cancer). I myself, in my 30's, have faced potentially terminal illness. IT AIN'T PRETTY. If you don't have respect for your own body, fine. Just don't have no respect for mine.

I will add though that I think smokers do at times get a raw deal. You should be able to smoke in your own home without repercussion. That is between you and the people living under your roof. I don't think smokers should be penalized in higher taxes. That, to me, is not fair.

Ok being from British Columbia - smoking is banned in all public places + you cant smoke within 3 meters of a public doorway/ window/or air intake vent.
some rules are a bit much - a truck driver got pulled over the other day and fined for smoking in his truck because its a workplace.
also you are not allowed to smoke in a vehicle now with children in it its illegal even if you have the windows cranked wide open.
i dont care if people smoke outside just do it away from the doors of a place that people have to walk through.
