I agree. It is already taking a toll on him. Out of the blue, he has announced to me that he is fat. It had nothing to do with the conversation.

I think that it is already happening. My neighbor's son is overweight. Now I think that is wrong and the boy, for his health, needs to loose weight. But what surprises me is that there are people who will approach a 11 year old boy to tell him that he needs to loose weight. We are talking about adults. When has expressing your disapproval at someone else's stupidity become acceptable.

For the record, I have no idea why the child is overweight. He plays outside with my daughters and they eat similar food. My girls are underweight and he is overweight.

His entire family is overweight and I don't ever see them overeating.

I believe that some folks are predispositioned to have a weight problem. If you ever notice, folks who generally are born and raised up north tend to be heavier than their southern folk. Honestly the only reason I can think of is the differences in climate. Also, different folks have a different metabolic rate... Now I know I am over weight and could loose some, but at 225 the doc wants me down to about 145-155 range. I eat healthy generally, and exercise so

I know this will benefit many folks health wise, but what will they outlaw next? Red Meat? Trans Fats? (oops they did in some places)

At 30 I was 175 pounds(my ideal weight). I quit smoking and got a desk job. Within a year I was at 220.

Why? 30 slowed my metabolism. I ate in place of smoking. Physical activity dropped.

Had a parent come in and do a presentation with a class on Friday. I'm not sure what he does for a living now, but he's taking some anatomy classes for a medical program. He brought in some real lungs (well...they were pigs lungs) that could be hooked up to a contraption that would allow air to be pumped into them. He had two sets of lungs, one nice and pinkish and healthy looking, and one pair that were blackish and rather shrunken looking that came from smoking. Since they were pigs' lungs, I was getting some sad mental images of how they managed to get smokers' lungs from pigs. I tried not to think too hard on THAT. But besides the obvious difference in how the lungs looked, the gunked up lung pair inflated at about half the rate of the healthy pair. He also showed some cross section slices of healthy vs smokers' lungs. It made me feel short of breath just looking at the smokers' lungs.
I wish my mom would have been there. Maybe it would have been the incentive to help her break her habit...emphyzema and oxygen to sleep with, and she still walks around w/ a cigarette... She's tried to quit several times through the years. I understand the addiction, but it still makes me angry and sad that she's throwing away the opportunity to live a healthy, longer life.
