LOVE THE SIGN!!!! ahahahahaha!!!!!

I feel bad throwing the door shut in people's faces, but after the Mormons came by and the guys were hitting on me for 1/2 an hour, I don't feel so bad anymore...

Anywhooooo....

As a former "door to door" salesman I can tell you I've about seen it all.

My first summer selling "books" for the Southwestern Co. out of Franklin, TN was in Ohio, summer of '76. I'll always remember watching the fireworks in Mansfield on the 4th of July, 200th anniversary of our independence!

That first summer, I stayed in three places. 4 weeks in Ashland, 4 weeks in Bucyrus and 5 weeks in Alpha, a little town to the east of Dayton near Beavercreek. At one door just to the east and north of Ashland in an area where there were some Amish, I knocked on a door and a fairly young woman {NOT AMISH} (probably in her early 20s) came to the door without a stitch of clothes on and then she asked me if there was anything she could do for me!!! I told her that the memory would last forever and I ran back to my bicycle and headed down her country lane away from that home at breakneak speed! Sheesh!!! The last week of that summer, I borrowed a car from some wonderful folks who lived on the northeast outskirts of Bucyrus and I delivered all of my books that I had been selling all summer long.

I did well... that first summer, I only made about $3,000... but I had just barely graduated from high school, so I figured that was pretty good for someone wet behind the ears. It paid for my first year college tuition and most of my living expenses for the year back then.

While selling, I would always knock on a door and say something like, "Hi there, how y'all doing? I'm just another one of those ol' salesmen, You don't shoot em out here do ya? I wish I had $5 for every time they'd say back, "We shoot every third one and the second one just left!"

As you can tell, there was never a dull moment and I had a lot of fun.

The second summer I sold was in the San Joaquin Valley, summer of 1980, and I stayed most of the time in north Fresno and sold points northward. That summer I made almost $11, 000., and I used my language skills in Spanish to sell to the migrant workers (Spanish Bibles)... and to the Portugeses Dairymen from the Azores that worked dairies all over the valley (Bibles in Portugese) and then lots of topical bibles and bible study guides. I loved all of the home cooked meals I was invited to... especially by the migrant workers. Wonderful, Wonderful people, and the best Mexican food on the planet!

I'll never forget one person telling me he knew someone just outside of Chowchilla who he was certain would buy from me and gave me directions on how to get to their farm. When I arrived, I was met by a woman who introduced herself to me as "Jesus Christ". Oh that was a fun conversation, let me tell you!

Third summer I sold was 1981 and I worked in and around Winchester, Indiana. Another memorable summer... only made about $6,000 that summer but it was a growth and development year for me.

So, have fun with salesmen! They have to make a living too! I was told "NO" most of the time, I got bit by dogs, threatened with weapons! and I met some of the greatest folks this country has... (mostly because I spent time in rural areas... coming from a rural area myself, I could relate)

Now I just sell fillings, crowns and bridges!

... and take care of chickens in my back yard!

When I was a kid I was mowing the neighbors lawn for them while they were on vacation. A couple of Jehovah's Witnesses came up and asked if my parents were home, I said yes. They went to the door and rang the doorbell, knocked, waited, rang the doorbell, knocked... finally they said to me "I thought you said your parents were home?"... I said "Yeah, they are, but I don't live here!".. they walked away in a huff.

Now, at work they call me the "telemarketing terrorist", reception sends all the telemarketers to me just to hear me tear them up.

we had JW's come once years ago, me and DH were working in the yard. I saw them coming asked DH loudly if he wanted the pistol or the rifle they turned around and went back to their car.haven't seen them since.

We get a lot of annoying phone-calls from solicitors too. (I can apprecait that some of these people are trying to earn an honest living.) But there's no excuse for them to be so pushy, rude, and demanding. After the 2nd "NO" they should politely walk away or leave you be. Some guy keeps calling me and my wife trying to sell pipes and other supplies, which we might be abl to use. I told him w just can't afford it now or for the forseeable futur. He keeps insisiting you can pay later or return it of you don't want it. Doesn't he get it... that if I don't have the money and I know of other expenses that I have coming up. I don't want to waste his time/money or mine. Sometimes, my wife tells the pushy ones that she's getting ready to leave the country; that usually shuts them up. Hahah!
