Okay, in that case I have some mutts, er, Freedom Rangers in my yard I would be happy to ship you.

Wait, no. Actually, they aren't Freedom Rangers. They are actually Dopplecluck Specials, specially crossed to produce feathers.

And they are because I say they are. Just go into any feed store and ask for them. I'm sure they will know what you are talking about.

There must then also be "no such thing" as Cornish X, Red Star, etc., since they are not true breeds and those are only the names those particular hybrids are known by. Good Lord, it drives me nuts when someone nitpicks this way. In fact, I'm beginning to smell Troll.

"And secondly, because both my BF and myself got the impression that he was being a bit chauvinistic in his male-approach to me."

Every time I'm with my Fiance[I'm a female] I have the same issue. I'm the expert and hands on person, with all animals, construction, plumbing, etc. But they always look to him, he is clueless and you can see it in his face, but they still insist because he is a man, he knows more than I do.
Even worse, when I'm alone and it deals with anything stereotypical as 'mans work' they always 'dumb it down' or explain certain words to me. It drives me up the wall, even when I tell them I know they still end up going back and being chauvinistic/sexist whatever you want to call it...

You smell no such thing. The point I'm trying to make is it isn't fair to judge some clerk because he has never heard of some brand name (which is all this is) for a relatively minor chicken hybrid from a relatively small hatchery. The guy could know his breeds, but just because he has never heard of a Freedom Ranger sold by a single hatchery in the United States doesn't make him a complete moron, as some in this thread have implied. Apparently, some here didn't even know it was a hybrid. On the other hand, the Cornish Rock Cross is probably the most numerous bird on the planet, certainly by far the most popular meat bird, even on here.

And I say this as someone who has actually raised Freedom Rangers. Even know their history. I like them okay, but would never expect anyone outside of a few meat bird raisers to have ever heard of them. Try popping into a bird show (those people KNOW their chickens) or a poultry auction and see if anyone has even heard of the things.

PS: I had to google Red Star. I hope I can be forgiven, as it is also just a brand name for a particular sex-link sold by a particular hatchery .

It is true that JM Hatchery was the only seller til recently. Their website says they still sell them http://www.jmhatchery.com/ They are a patented hybrid. It would be odd indeed for a feed store clerk to have heard of them, since they usually don't know a buff orp from a Leghorn.
