True, another reason I find it odd is because I switched the feed I would say about 6-8 months after the feather loss happened so I don’t know if that would change anything. Before I was using layer feed from Wilco, purina layena crumbles premium poultry feed
If you can find a feed that's 18% protein or more for a decent price, I'd get it.
 
For mites and lice, you can check their belly/vent area, if there is an infestation, usually there are mite/lice eggs and live insects.

For protein, if feed with higher protein level is hard to obtain, mealworm, fishmeal, meat scraps will do the job. Some people give their hens cooked eggs. I give mine steam/boiled prawn heads, steam/grilled fish, meat scrap (at least 50% lean) and milk powder.

My birds are free range, so I thought slightly higher fat content might be okay.
