One of the Silkies in my rooster pen has some funky feet. There are five birds in the pen, including 1 Dominique, 1 Wyandotte mutt, 1 Thai Game, and another Silkie (the son of this bird). 4/5 had regular old feather mites and one had a torn toenail when I did a routine check earlier today, both of which I treated. All are healthy and have daily access to clean water and high quality feed. They spend a lot of time inside the coop on pine shavings, because their run is pretty sunny during the day. Aside from the torn toenail, all other birds have normal feet. None of the birds in my adjoining pens have any evidence of foot issues either.

I'm on mobile, so I'll add the pictures in a response once this is posted (for some reason they won't post in this first post).

Yes, leg mites there. Smother them by smearing vaseline on the feet and legs. Make sure you smoosh it up under the scales really well to kill the mites. May have to reapply couple times a week, and you should see improvement in 3-4 weeks. People will recommend other things, like bag balm or olive oil, but the concept is the same. You need to physically smother the mites.

I've heard of soaking the feet first in warm water to soften the skin, dry with a towel to exfoliate and loosen dead scales, then dipping the legs and feet in linseed or olive oil to suffocate the mites, wipe off excess oil, then follow up with vasoline. Apply the vasoline several times a week until the legs look normal again. I've read too that your whole flock should be treated because it is likely they will all be infected.
Also the coop will need to be thoroughly cleaned.
There is a 3 day course of treatment that involves gasoline and A & D ointment.
DAY 1: Dip legs in gas, air dry, rub ointment on the legs.
DAY 2: Rub with the ointment only.
DAY 3: Dip legs in gas, air dry, rub with the ointment.
Treatment is done.
Good luck! I hope your birds are well soon!

Birds are VERY susceptible so I myself would NEVER use gasoline! My best advice, search leg mites and follow what DAWG says to do. I did and medicated them making it easy and thorough. Then no mess on their legs and feet to deal with.

Thanks for the input. I haven't seen any other cases so I think I'll wait to treat unless somebody gets obvious signs. I don't expect it to, it looks like it's been developing for a LONG time but none of the other roosters kept with him show signs, much less birds in adjoining pens. Strange, but I'll take it happily. Gasoline is the treatment I've always known so I think I'll do that followed with a course of olive oil.
