Thanks NewHobby. I did not put my girl to sleep, but it looks like she will be going on her own any minute...

Because The pathologist at the lab said that injection (to euthanize) would prevent conclusive testing for botulism, I decided to ask my old (dog/cat) vet if he could prescribe a sedative so that I could have her driven to the lab tomorrow without stress, and they would euthanize using a gas that wouldn't affect the labs.

With that said, I just returned with the medication and found her with feet up in the air, still alive, but not long for this world. I just gave her a light does of the sedative so that she can fall asleep and probably go quietly on her own tonight with her sister sleeping next to her.

The sister Renee has been as stressed as I have been...She is so concerned about her sick sister that she has been by her side for two weeks, running back in from outside the minute she hears a peep. She also gets really upset whenever I have been hand feeding or giving medication to her sister, worried that I'm hurting her. She looks on attentively and starts pecking me if her sister makes a stressful sound. It's amazing what loyalty they seem to have for one another, and heartwrenching to watch. I'm sure the sister will eventually adjust. She likes the silkies, but they don't fly and are a bit slow for her taste. She is terrified of the araucanas (half her size!), especially my pushy one shown in the video. I hope they will eventually adjust and learn to get along.

I will miss my little Dottie. She was so sweet and curious about everything. Thanks again for all of your support.

. Please let us know what the labs show as the diagnosis.

Thanks Chickerdoodle, Hope you NEVER have to deal with this, and good luck when you get your new chicks! One thing we've probably all learned is: Get vaccinated babies if you can!

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. I just found this thread yesterday and read through it all. You are an amazingly caring and attentive chicky-mama! I loved your last video showing the aracauna come inside looking for treats!

I lost a few young hens last spring and never knew what it was. The last one was my silkie who exhibited the leg paralysis, so now I'm thinking this may be what was going on. After reading this thread, I'm going to be much more vigilant about keeping chicks away from the older flock for a couple months.. I'm thinking I must have put them in the same proximity too early. The adults are all fine.

Anyway, I came across this information this morning and want to share it with you and all others reading here for future reference:

Yes, me too! and I happened upon it by chance.

If anyone knows of anything like that for cats and/or dogs, please let me know.

thank you!

There are several pretty good books that I purchased a couple of years ago on the subject...As I recall, One was better than the others as far as spectrum of information. I have since given them to my Dad, but I think this was the best one I found:

(This is the one that got the best reviews and the cover looks familiar, so I think this is the one.)
