NON GMO feeds

I was using the Sandpoint reference for the person from Boise - not to be shady about where I was from - which would be - Shadow Hills California, Los Angeles County. And someone asked me where in Montana Sandpoint was, so I replied to them. Please take a moment to breathe, you're coming off as uber cranky. I can't see what the purpose of that would be.

Chickengeorgeto - I respectfully don't agree with you . The cons far outweigh the pros. People are getting sicker and the creatures that are part of the process for food growth are dying.
Can you provide citations that support your position that the cons outweigh the pros.

I submit that there are more obvious reasons for the decrease in the health of our society. Primary among them are the lack of physical work and overconsumption of food.

What I had reference to Weeflock is the statement made by someone else that RoundUp Ready corn and wheat was not a GMO when it started.

Of course I am sure that you would agree with me that the environment is the true beneficiary from GMOs not Monsanto or any other seed company.

Benefit one: Reduced consumption of fossil fuels because of the reduced need to plow or cultivate to control weeds.
Benefit two: Reduced loss of top soil because of reduced wind erosion.
Benefit three: Reduced loss of top soil because of reduced water erosion.
Benefit four: Fewer chemical pesticides needed to battle insect, weed, disease, and other agricultural pests.
Benefit five: Better and more healthy varieties of food crops to help feed the world or to prevent certain diseases. See Golden Rice.
Benefit six: Reduced need for irrigation water, thus helping to keep the peace between nations with insufficient water resources.
Benefit seven: The increased production of new drugs and medicines in ways that were never before possible.
Benefit eight: Healthier drinking water from the reduced need for cultivation and a huge reduction in the use of pesticides that can show up in drinking water.
Benefit nine: The need to cultivate fewer acres of land, therefor reducing human impact on everything from the rain forests to the Earth's savannas.

Nice synopsis of the positives of modern technology in Modern crop production.

Lazy J, This thread was started by and for people who don't want to feed their chickens GMOs; for whatever reason. It was not started to ignite a debate between supporters and non-supporters. We don't need or want to hear evidence for the cons; I think I speak for weeflock when I say we've heard them, we understand why people would feel otherwise, and we respectfully disagree and wish to feed our chickens non GMOs if possible. We don't have to submit citations or otherwise prove the feelings we as individuals are entitled to have. If you are interested in debating it, promoting it, supporting it, whatever, then please feel free to start your own thread.

Someone posted a comment as FACT, I simply asked for proof of that FACT. I did not state a position on GMOs nor attack the posters position. If you want me to stop thread drift you should start much earlier in the thread than my late post.

I'm not uber cranky. Yet I do know who wrote what in this thread and you should as well. Details matter to me. I respect your right to have the opinions you have about GMO even though they differ from mine.

Round-up ready corn and wheat was not GMO when it started. Monsanto found a few plants that had a natural resistance to glyphosate (sp?) due to crop claims and decided to grow the seeds produced to develop seedstock.
Can you provide a source for your statement above? I went to Monsanto's site and could not find anything to back that up.

"Biotechnology, or genetic engineering, is the process of inserting a gene from one species, like a plant or a bacterium, into another species. At Monsanto our biotechnology work is concentrated on but not limited to corn, cotton, soybeans and canola.

Monsanto’s corn pipeline includes products that will help farmers produce more while reducing inputs. Our biotechnology-derived products offer farmers higher yields and better crop protection against environmental stresses and pests"

I personally choose not to use GMOs for several reasons, which is why I support labeling laws. I also feed scratch n' peck to my small flock, and shop where local, organic foods are sold (as much as possible.)

It's so nice there are more and more options out there than there used to be!

I do not have evidence to that effect, sorry. Late 90's I worked in the Ag chemical industry delivering pesticides and fertilizer to growers as well as applying them. We had grower meetings that were learning seminars so the growers could keep their pesticide licenses. My info on Round-up ready wheat and corn came from those. We as a corp and our Agronomist had no reason to be wrong about that and many reasons to have the truth.

That's a bit off on the "pro" list.

I'm surrounded by conventional farms & GMO crops. Cultivation techniques are changing as quite a few farmers are looking towards growing techniques more utilized by organic farming. Things change.. techniques change.. with advancements in information and technology.

If you want to go through it on another thread- I most happily will respond.

Anyways.. ATTRA is a good one to check for some info on poultry feeds if you are looking to grow/make your own. (attra.org)

Are you just looking for brands.. or home sourced feed options? I was actually debating about ordering some scratch & peck. Mine hate pellets. They won't eat it.. but they will pulverize it and turn it into a dust bath in the coop. I still have it out and organic... plus they get a pretty big assortment too (frozen wild berries, baked squash, kitchen scraps, fresh greens, butchering scraps, etc.) Wood sorrel is one that grows well on my windowsill. (Caution- has oxalic acid- but my birds still love it.) Oh.. and alfalfa is always there- the fields are set in alfalfa & clover, so we are using it in the coop.
