Non Shedding Dogs?

It is my understanding that all dogs (with hair) shed, some just shed a lot less than others. Most wire coats (many terriers) shed very little, as do poodles. Many of the more "hair like" breeds shed less as well (yorkie's, shi tzu, malties), but their coats tend to tangle, like human hair, if left long and will require regular brushing. As a former poodle owner, I can attest that they do indeed shed some hair, it is minimal, but should be brushed out on a regular basis.

Additionally, many labradoodles shed a lot. They are a cross, you usually have no garantees of coat type. Some have a more poodle like coat, others have a more labrador coat, many ended with with a longer coat (like a poodle) that sheds more like a labrador.

We have a labradoodle!!! He is the best dog we have ever had.

He doesn't shed because he is part poodle and has a "hair" coat. It is like hair in that it is not constantly replacing itself like shedding dogs. Also, they don't get a "winter coat" and then shed it.

Their hair continues to grow just like yours, so they have to be groomed to keep it at a manageable length. Otherwise, it gets really long and hard to care for. My dog looks like he has dreads if his hair grows a long time.

Groomers charge by weight, so the bigger the dog, the more expensive. Most dogs require grooming about every 6 weeks.

Not only does he not shed, but he really doesn't trigger the allergies that most dogs do. If I pet any other dog, I get itchy and if they lick me I break out in hives. Not so with our doodle. I don't know why. Lots of people with allergies have poodles or doodles.

When I started researching, I was amazed at all the different breeds that are non shedding. If you are interested in large dogs, another one is the Portuguese water dog.

FYI, it is great that our dog doesn't shed, but he is still a dog and still makes a mess!! But you can hug him and not have his fur all over you!!

My Irish Setters have human like hair, so if they shed nobody knows if it's their hair or mine.

They don't have an under coat and honestly I don't find much hair around at all. I do have to brush them a few times a week, but I don't mind it at all, they like the attention. There is nothing more beautiful (in my opinion) then a freshly brushed Irish setter standing outside in the grass on a windy day..it's stunning. (Think I love the breed?)

This is true!!!!! They do get matted if not tended to properly. Lucky for me I am VERY handy with clippers so i keep our 2 Maltese in a puppycut which is easier to manage. It seems all breeds have their PRO's and CON's so its good to get to hear about everything.
