I'm posting a link to a video I found on youtube yesterday concerning lice and mites in chickenhouses. People are always asking for natural ways to deal with pests so this seems to be a good way to manage lice and mites. It is very very well done, with all the details on making cardboard traps. Great video... I'll stick with my permethrin spray. It doesn't take 6 months to get rid of the lice and mites, but maybe 6 weeks. So far since I have been spraying regularly I haven't had any but have seen wild birds in a coop so I'm spraying as a precaution.

are all mites red fter they feast.? read there are all types of mites i used to see red mites and green mites yrs ago back in the city in my window sills near some tall bushes.long before moved here to more rural acreage

He has made at least 2 videos dealing with lice and mites, one of them he said he tried this because the spray wasn't working. I have no idea what spray he was using in France, but it seems like it could be another tool to use, even if just for monitoring. I'm thinking of putting a few around and see what happens. I haven't seen evidence of mites so far, I do dust the birds periodically.

I only have a small flock but with as many birds as you have you'd need a whole troop of elves rolling cardboard, hahaha!

I would suspect there are many different kinds of mites, I remember those windowsill ones too when I lived in Denver. So far I haven't seen any in my hen house but I suppose eventually I will. Creepy little things!

I discovered them last year but it was during the time the birds molt so I thought the birds were molting but they didn't seem to be getting their feathers in like they should so upon further inspection discovered the mites. At first I used DE but after reinspecting the birds, they still had the mites. I did use some Seven dust on the birds affected after giving them baths with flea soap, which did help but didn't get rid all of them so I bought a spray bottle of premixed permethrin spray. The mites started in one coop so I did that coop. I went to TSC and bought the concentrate and sprayed all of the coops as a precaution. I moved the birds to another coop that I had treated and power washed their coop and put clean shaving in it and gave it another spray to be on the safe side. I continued spraying weekly for awhile and eventually didn't see any more.
