Here's my introduction.
I just got chickens last Summer for the first time. I can't say that I don't know anything about them but this is my first time raising them. I got 7 Buff orpingtons in July and built them a very simple 4x8x4 run with attached 2'x4' box (undivided) for nesting and they seem to like it. I let them roam free for 75% of the time but not when we're out of town. My purpose for posting here is to get ideas for a more permanent structure. Maybe around 12 total. I have 5 pullets? hens? and 2 roosters all sharing the space. They seem to get along so far despite what people tell me about roosters not getting along so well. My goal for these chickens is to raise eggs for the family to eat, sell some eggs and also hatch some eggs to sell chicks.

I have a poll below and I would like you to please vote for this design or another. If I do build this coop I will expand it to be 12ftx8ft including the attached run

G’Day from down under joeyoung25 :frow Welcome!

I like the look of the coop but worry about the ventilation?

Chicken Coop Ventilation - Go Out There And Cut More Holes In Your Coop!

Also, your location and climate is important when making a decision on a coop; if you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. There are some on kitting out the coop, bedding etc.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Welcome Joe! It's great to have you here.

That is a great looking coop, and if you have the skills and inclination to build that, it would be be impressive.

On the other hand, it seems kind of small, especially the coop (indoor) area. If you let them free-range 75% of the time, I would tend to put my resources more into coop space, so they have plenty of room in there, and let them be a little more crowded during minority of the time they're not free-ranging but still outside, if you need to make that tradeoff.

That's my take anyway.

Welcome to BYC! I would do a total predator area inventory and then research predator proofing under our articles section. Your construction skills are totally admirable if you buit that coop yourself. I would extend the run and roost space dramitically but could use the same structure or knock out the back wall of the "coop and make it an 8x10" structure to accomodate everyone inside in winter. Definately go with more ventilation if you simply expand your current coop.

I think it needs more ventilation as I do not know what region of the country you live in. Chicken poop alot on the roost and it needs ventilation to prevent frostbite depending on breed/ region to prevent frostbite(from condensation).
Regardless my coop is about 25% ventilation as I need that in the summer anyway! Feel free to click on the geographic locale under my account settings. We need it in the southern and northern extremes.

---edit----

referring to the roost area only! I might have been unclear.
