Nope!

Went into lockdown yesterday. Although 15 went into lockdown I suspect that 6 of them are not viable, but as they were BCM I just couldn't be positive. For certain though I have 2 BCM, 5 Salmon Faverolles, and 2 light sussex/orpington? crosses. We'll have to wait for the light sussex to hatch before we're sure who the daddy was. But at last candling there are 9 fluttering little shadows inside those eggs! I'm so excited. Come on Friday!

Humidity was reading at 50% with both channels full so I dipped a cloth (dishcloth) in the channels and laid it out under the eggs. That did the trick and now humidity is holding at 70% (I've read this is the ideal for turkeys).

I knew that they had pipped internally because their heads were moving around IN the air cell. A chick pips into the air cell before pipping the shell. If you can see any of the bird in the air cell, that means that they've pipped internally HTH

Great idea with the cloth - thank you.

And how cool regarding the internal pipping. I did not know this.

Well now I'm worried about my humidity. I filled both wells and closed the vent to 1/3, but I never purchased a hygrometer to measure my humidity. I was hoping that if I followed the instructions that would be okay. So I have no idea what the humidity is in there. Hope they're doing okay!

I wouldn't be too worried (well, actually I would because quite frankly, I worry about EVERYTHING lol) tbh. I've read so many stories on here about people who've forgotten when some chicks are due and they have ended up hatching before being put into lockdown. I've heard about early chicks who hatched before lockdown etc - you never can tell and there's no point worrying, especially as it's out of your control. Now, if I could just take my own advice...

Prob not best to tell her not to worry about it. I would suggest going out a buying a hygrometer. They are very cheap and you can find them at Walmart or Petco. Esp during lockdown. If your humidity is to low, It could effect your hatch. Same for too high as well.

I understand that, however being that she's already in lockdown, she won't have time to a) buy one and b) calibrate it and c) won't be able to open the incubator to put it in - therefore, it's too late for this hatch and there's no point her worrying about it. Also, the Brinsea manual suggests that just filling both channels and closing the vent hole 2/3 shut should be fine.

Okay, I will positively purchase one for the next hatch. For this one, since it's too late - I'll just fly on a wing and a prayer and perform some kind of hatching dance ritual. Thanks all for your input!

I just got an eco 20 off of CL today and loaded it with 34 eggs

I have a hygrometer, which I faithfully watched the first hatch. Now that I'm at my 4th hatch, I just toss the thing in there once or twice a week, to make sure the bator isn't too dry. When lockdown occurs, I add the water and a wet cloth below the basket, and when the window fogs up a little bit, I'm happy. I no longer mess with the hygrometer. My hatches come out fine.
Happy Hatching!!
