Normal Behavior?

Probably a stupid question...

I got my chickens a few weeks ago. They're finally all laying well so I figured I'd let them out of their run to free range a bit. They walked about six inches out the gate and immediately dug themselves into the dirt and are having a grand old time rolling around in the dirt.

Normal? Will they wander around more as they get more comfy?

They are taking dust baths.

They will venture out more as they see fit. We have a huge yard and ours stayed in only like a quarter of it forever. It took months before they'd head to the other side of the yard and now, a year and a half later, they still barely do that. They have a large area in the back of our yard near the coop that they like best. And, they generally hang out there the most.
