My 12 week old Dark Brahma roo (Barack O'Brahma) has started grabbing the ladies by the neck and forcing their heads down. He apparently has a favorite hen because her neck feathers appear to be down to pins on a little area at the back of her neck.

Is this just normal Roo behavior or roasting pan behavior? I just figured he was kind of young to start asserting himself just yet.

His favorite hen so far

Thank you all!

That's normal. He's trying to mate. The roosters have to hold on to the back of the head of the hens to hold on for balance for mating. In young roosters, this takes quite a bit of practicing before they get it right.

And she may not be so willing because she's not ready yet. So she'll fight it until she's mature enough.

OK. I'll put the seasonings away......for now....

She may fight it after she's laying, too... Not all of them are easily impressed so he'll have to learn to dance and give food presents if he wants the girls to like him.
