First of all, welcome to the forum.

You will find as many different opinions on what types of chickens to get, as there are people on this forum.

If you are only going to get a few hens (3 or 4 perhaps?) and you want to get as many eggs as possible, you should probably get one of the hybrids bred especially for egg laying. These include Golden Comets, Shaver Reds, ISA Browns, Red Sex Links, Black Sex Links. All do well in our climate.

If you are maybe not interested in absolutely maximizing production, pick a pure breed that you like the looks of. I have buff orpingtons. I have 9 hens, and get more eggs than we can eat. We still get 4 or 5 eggs per day, when it was warmer we got 6 or 7 per day. I like the way they look, and they are also very docile, and relatively quiet.

Pick something you like, and I"m sure there will be people on this site that can give you some feedback.

If it helps even more innercity, look through FeatherSite.com. They have lists of 1000s of breeds with pictures and info on each one. Other then the fact its fun to see whats out there... it really does help you decide on pure breed or hybrid.

Some people are about the looks of the bird, and others expect performance.... I prefer both!

I am looking for blue or black Orpingtons. We have a Barred Rock rooster, 3 RIR hens, a buff orpington hen and a "I don't know" hen. We want to start breeding a specific line and love the orpingtons.

I live near Hickory.

We are starting to get our Lavender Orpington project birds soon.
We will be selling the blacks as chicks for pick up and we are not far from Hickory.

Just saw your other reply.....That would be fabulous. We are so interested in finding good quality birds in the blue, black and lavender varieties. They are just amazing. Let me know when would be a good time to come see your set up.

Hi folks. This is Dave27889. I live in eastern N.C. Washington, N.C. to be exact. I just got the following poultry. @ ameracauna hen and a georgous Rooster we are calling the Boss. I also got 2 what the guy called Arkansas Browns hens and a Rooster they have just molted. Lastly I got 12 straight run barred rocks. One is really small and the rest are suppose to start laying anytime now. I think at least two in this group are roosters. I have 18 altogether. I also have a mix of about 50 hatching eggs coming in about 9 days or so. I went nuts.
I got all of the roosters and hens at an auction in Stokes, NC. Its called Tand H auction house. They had tons of bantams and really nice chickens and some ducks. The stuff was running really low priced. I had a great time there. It is open every 2nd and 4th Saturday. Maybe you guys could try there. I know I will be back.
I may be having to get rid of a barred rock rooster or 2 soon. I will keep you posted. If someone can tell me how to load pictures to this site I have some decent ones to show. You can also look up T and H online. Later, Dave27889

Hello All,
I just set some of my eggs and took a couple pictures. Figured I show them to y'all. These are some of my Marans , Wellsummers and RIR's eggs.
Dave, you know I have lived this close to Stokes all my life and never been to the sale.

It was alot of fun. Maybe some of close could set something up sometime. The place is not fancy but it is clean. The have decent bathrooms, hot coffee and sandwich stuff. The take preaproved checks, credit and debit cards and the all important CASH. They are open every friday nite for other auction stuff I was told. I didn't go to that. I already have too much stuff.
I got seven eggs this morning and 6 out of the seven were fertile. Don't know which rooster did the deed but happy to know somebody is doing his jub. I plan on seperating the birds by breed after my catscans and mylogram tomorrow. I'll be off my feet and offline for the next couple of days so I will catch you folks then.

Hey steelshot! How did you load your picture to your message. I have some of the new stuff I just bought but can't get them to my message. By the way I still want some chicks from you or hatching eggs when you get caught up. We can get a sandwich or coffe at the old chuckwagon in jamesville sometime soon. Later to all see you the end of the week I hope, Dave27889
