North Carolina

Hi everyone...New guy here from Hatteras Island.

I have been lurking, trying to figure out who is who. Thanks for the post, as they are very helpful for a newbie!!! I am struggling with some of the abreviations. I am figuring them out slowly. I plan to watch MUCH more than I post.

Planning my first ever coop now with chicks hopefully by April. My son (DS???) will be 3 in April, and we want to acclimate him to the chicks early.

Chosing breeds seems a little complicated. Looking for layers at first. RIR and white legerns are my first choices. Are these suitable for young Miles' first birds???

Leghorns wouldn't be at the top of my list for a family layer/pet flock only because they have a tendancy to be flightier than many other breeds...

Australorps, Orpingtons, RIR, Sussex, ameraucanas/EE's, all tend to be really good reliable layers who tend to be pretty laid back especially when handled and interacted with on a regular basis. Any chicken treated well and bribed with good treats gets used to people and handling ;)

I will get you one tomorrow. He is from Sandy actually. He is still quite young, maybe 4 months old now and he is quite the small fellow! But I am sure he will mature out and get some size on him soon! He is definitely a boy, already has a back head full of streamers, but he already has some good potential. :) I will check him over really good and may spot clean him and take some pictures (its been raining lately and muddy here - all my light colored birds look dirty *bleh* )

Awesome, thank you :)

I also second SOS...leghorns are flighty, I am personally not a fan of the RIR either. Production red such as Golden Comets.... super friendly. They will come a running at the sight of you, looking for a treat. Orps. EEs, Sussex. All good. If you are looking for funky.... NN ( naked necks) super friendly and great layers.

Busy morning ahead.... have to do regular chores, then go back out and pack up birds heading to auction.
See everyone there.................

The rir hens I had were good, the rooster .... well he was the best guard dog against anything and everyone! I wont have any more rir roosters, as I have read that that's normal in them and the hens can be that way too. But as others have said, there's other breeds that are good. My black sex links and buff orps are great layers and have good temperaments.
