I have a couple questions.

Where is the line drawn as far as where you need chicken varieties that are winter hardy? I mean do I need winter hardy chickens in NC or would I have to be up above the mason dixon line for that requirement?

9 degrees on the barn thermometer

Only had 4 Silkies hatch yesterday out the 9 that went into lockdown

couldn't get the humidity up high enough. Of course I opened the eggs that didn't hatch and all the chicks were fully developed & had absorbed their yolk sacs so I KNOW it was the humidity. Have to fine tune this homemade bator because I'm putting in 18 new eggs today.

Got off the mountain yesterday for the first time in a week; I thought for sure the road would have been decent, but it was still a solid sheet of ice~~so glad I have 4 wheel drive. Once I hit the main road though, everything was clear. At least alot of people were still staying home, so I didn't have to fight the crowds to get the shopping done.

Lost one tree to those horrific winds; missed my FIL's house by about a foot~~~at least it gave him something NEW to talk about

I am in Semora, about 25 minutes North of you, and I will tell you from experience in NC it doesn't really seem to be a big deal with cold weather except maybe the really large single combed breeds like leghorns, only because they are so prone to frostbite on their combs. Other than that you'll be good when it comes to cold weather. Me personally I worry more about heat tolerance as opposed to cold hardiness with our wicked hot summers lately.
