I have a couple questions.

Where is the line drawn as far as where you need chicken varieties that are winter hardy? I mean do I need winter hardy chickens in NC or would I have to be up above the mason dixon line for that requirement?

Good Morning Neighbors!
Wow~~look at all the new folks~~so glad all of you'll are here--hope you'll come back often & talk "chicken"

couldn't get the humidity up high enough. Of course I opened the eggs that didn't hatch and all the chicks were fully developed & had absorbed their yolk sacs so I KNOW it was the humidity. Have to fine tune this homemade bator because I'm putting in 18 new eggs today.

Sweet man of mine is doing a little better this morning

Got off the mountain yesterday for the first time in a week; I thought for sure the road would have been decent, but it was still a solid sheet of ice~~so glad I have 4 wheel drive. Once I hit the main road though, everything was clear. At least alot of people were still staying home, so I didn't have to fight the crowds to get the shopping done.

Lost one tree to those horrific winds; missed my FIL's house by about a foot~~~at least it gave him something NEW to talk about

Hope everyone is doing great this morning

hi neighbor!

I am in Semora, about 25 minutes North of you, and I will tell you from experience in NC it doesn't really seem to be a big deal with cold weather except maybe the really large single combed breeds like leghorns, only because they are so prone to frostbite on their combs. Other than that you'll be good when it comes to cold weather. Me personally I worry more about heat tolerance as opposed to cold hardiness with our wicked hot summers lately.

Great choices that I've had, or know people to have in the piedmont :

Barred Rocks (or any Plymouth Rocks)
Dominques
Polish
Silkies
Rhode Islands
New Hampshire Reds
Any sexlinks/production layers
Easter Eggers
Ameracaunas
Brahmas
Cochins
About any Banties (my bantams do awesome in this cold weather as long as the coop is warm at night)

There are many possibilities. So no variety isn't going to be hurt at all by our temps.

This begins my birthday celebration!
So glad you were able to get out BC! Very glad the tree fell clear of the house. To cold for skylights!

I've got a chance at a cabinet incubator. It works, and has extra parts. But it is an antique! Do I need a cabinet? Is the money gonna pay off? I need reasons for the wife...
Peace,
Story
