North Carolina

Hi everyone, I'm in NC, too. We live in Liberty, which is just outside Burlington. I've been on this site about a year but never noticed this thread. Guess I've been missing out!

Beautiful little goat babies!!

Editing to add:

I have a flock of about 8 guineas, who are free-range. Great bug-eaters. I got the first four guineas from a neighbor and incubated and raised babies. Plan on raising some more this year if I find eggs.

Also have 12 RIRs that are free range but come in to their house at night. We just raise them for the yummy eggs, for us and friends and family. Love having them around. I'm learning more and more about poultry. I have a great incubator and a whole "bird room" in my barn for the "in-between" (between brooder and free-range) so I wouldn't mind raising some more variety.

Also have 55 BW Quail eggs in the incubator, on day 9. My husband is building a fly pen, where he will raise the quail to hunt.

I need help!

Chickenmath and springtime are reeking havoc here :lau

I have 20 chicks in my big brooder, and by thrusday I'll have 20+ more chicks in my big tote and 5 ducklings in another brooder. Plus in 3 weeks, before any of the others are ready to go outside, I'll hopefully have a good number of asstored banies hatching! Chickens are so highly addictive, and there's no cure! O well time to start expanding my chicken run!

Ok ladies and gents I will get my chicks next week and want to know what I will need
1. grogel, do I need it?
2. what kind of chick food Chick starter or starter and grow, and how long do I feed them this type
3. anything else I need to know

They will be inside and secure. I have a ecoglow 50. Bought chick starter and grit ( I can start the grit at 2 weeks right?)
DH is tired of my questioning myself LOL

I still feed my girls purina starter/grower, only because ages in my flock vary. And offer oyster shell now that they lay. I fed starter/grower medicated 25lbs bag until I ran out then switched to non-medicated.

They do not need the grogel. I feed chick starter until they are about to lay, then they get layer. They do not need grit until you start giving them treats. The starter is easily processed without it. I have not read reviews on the ecoglow, but am not sure how good it is.

The basic rules are good food and water at all times and heat. 95 degrees at first then work you way down about 5 degrees each week. Make sure that they have plenty of ventilation, but no direct drafts.

Matt
