Thanks for the support on our dog, she means the world to me.  I've decided to try my best to re-establish myself as alpha.  Until we reach an agreement she will remain in her kennel while my girls are around.  I did a ton of research last night and do believe she has become more"comfortable" b/c I have taken to let her do her own thing.  As of today she will be getting a rude awakening which will hopefully get us back on track.

The chicken boys did well for their first night in the coop!  My test roo's are getting to live in the coop to see if it's preditor proof.  I would much rather loss a roo than my hen's.

Good luck working with your dog! I know how much a dog means to a family. Praying everything works out well for everyone. :)
Congrats on moving the boys out to the coop!

So my Biggie baby is black..

Was really hoping for blue, NEED blue!! Oh well, it is one MASSIVE chick, I think one of if not the biggest I have hatched from his offspring.

This is the first pic as they got moved from the incubator to the brooder last night. Will get some better pics in a few days.

NH, I am so glad your bird is sitting for you! I love that I can get my silkies to do that for me. I really don't have the $ to invest in an incubator and I sure do get the itch to hatch this time of year. I have 4 broody silkies right now! That's after 1 already hatched 4 chicks for me. So not getting a lot of eggs from that coop. Hahahaha I wish you a HIGH hatch rate.

I tried to see if I could sex my chicks yesterday. 2 have feathered out SUPER fast and have all their wing and tail feather, 2 don't have the tail feathers yet at all. None of their combs have grown at all to be noticeable. So its still questionable what sexes I have. However, I recently saw a BCM about their age who was OBVIOUSLY going to be a roo where the comb was already sticking out. So I have to say I am THRILLED I may have all girls. :D Then again... I REALLY have to wait a few more weeks. I need patience! hahaha

Everyone, does anyone want to take a drake who needs a home? One of my friends from Cary sent me a message someone dumped a duck at her house. He's really friendly and the duck is lovin' on her kids but she can't keep him. I offered to take him so I can feed him and get him what he needs, but I know my Drake 'Christmas' will not accept him. I can't chance them not getting along. I'm going to go get him this evening from her but I wanted to start finding him a home in mean time. I think he's a blue or black swede. The picture she had was so small and the lighting was funky with her son holding him, so I'm not 100% on the breed or color. I'll get more info.... but again, he's REALLY friendly.

It didn't work...I'm still here and waiting!! DH has his fingers crossed for Sunday (he thinks an April Fool's baby would be cool.) My fingers are crossed for whenever my mother is able to get down here and watch the other little one. LOL Just hoping to have enough food prepared that she will NOT have to cook!!

LOL...SHHHH, I didn't say that!!

Scott - We live out in the boonies, so no one would even notice the sounds of gunshot, as we frequently hear "neighbors" having target practice (one works for or runs a gun shop, according to his vehicle), we have hunters all around as well as wild boar/coyote that we're allowed to "dispose of." Thus I am not opposed to having a gun...I'd just like to learn how to use it first!!

Don't want to shoot my foot when I was suppose to be shooting a predator!! Glad I could offer some happy news for you last night as well!!

I am hoping and praying all turns out well for you. I am not a dog person myself, but I do understand how they can become such an integral part of the family and how hard it is to make any decision on whether or not an animal stays or goes. Best of luck to you and we're all hoping for the best!

We are on day 3 or 4 of our broody sitting on her eggs!!
wee.gif
I think it's safe enough to say at least for now that she is intending to hatch these...for now!! I do get "the evil eye" every time I go into the coop to check on her. I have NOT stuck my hand underneath to to check if she has more eggs than what I marked or not...and yesterday she did not come off the eggs when I brought their food in. I hope she is eating/drinking well enough...she's one of my favorites (SHHH, don't tell the other girls, they might get jealous). Still looking to get rid of 1 rooster and add a few more hens (when they're ready) because I can't seem to keep the chicken saddles ON these girls and their backs are all torn up by the boys fighting over who is going to be the last one to "visit" each girl!! I am on my 4th set of chicken saddles (gave up the idea of using snaps for easy access) and yet they still manage to get them off!!

It's a conspiracy I tell you!!

Once we are done planting our garden, DH's next project (completely decided by him) is to dig a "small" 20-40 gallon Koi pond for us to have DUCKS complete with a water feature (as an added bonus to me) and a working filter/pump.
love.gif
Have I ever said how great of a guy he is?? I think he secretly wants to design and build a filtering pump system so we can keep the water clean without expending too much water/electricity...he's thinking solar powered pump/filter!! I just nod my head and say the ducks would be just as happy with a kiddie pool and how much I appreciate all that he does!!
big_smile.png
Who am I to argue with a mini pond, right?? LOL Again, I think it's a secret way for him to get out of infant diaper duty!!
Well, I am off to make bread for the next few weeks...have a great day everyone!!

If anyone local wants to borrow my incubator pm me, I don't think I'm going to hatch anything very soon..I've been concentrating on my garden.

SomeTHING ate my broody buff orpington hen, Myrtle, last night!!!! She was my first hen..Flavio found her body, but the head was missing.

I just got rid of our guard geese for honking all night and now I know why..

I want to be outside today, but I'm stuck inside! Arrrgghhh!!!

On the freezer-bator...I keep thinking. (I know; bad habit!) It's a chest freezer, 10 cubic feet but I don't know the dimensions. It would be better for me if it were an upright, as reaching the bottom is getting harder. Not a problem with a freezer being a freezer, but with an incubator, I'd be in it more often. I'm thinking I might find a broken dorm fridge and use that. Or just break down and plan on getting a good incubator for myself for my next birthday. That'll give me plenty of time to think it over. No matter what brand of styrofoam incubators I get, after a year or so I can no longer disinfect them well enough, and the hatch rate drops. This last hatch was the worst ever, although it seems nearly half were clears, so it wasn't just the bator. Still, I spend every summer fighting with them, and I'm tired of it.

The freezer could still make a dang fine brooder, though.

Awwww... that stinks

Sounds like a raccoon. They seem to just rip the heads off and leave the rest.

I'm so sorry about your hen! :hugs

I have a cross-beak chick (boy, I think) that I need to rehome. He is 7 weeks old, and eats fine out of a deep feeder dish. The problem is that everyone else wants the same dish, and he gets pushed aside. :( he would make a great pet, he follows me around outside. I just can't have him separated from everyone else just for food. I don't really have the space to care for him properly. If anyone its interested, please let me know. :)
