Good morning everyone! I stole a quick moment to hop on while both kids are sleeping- a rare treat that hasn't happened since bringing DD2 home!!

We still only have ONE chick, but momma is still sitting on the other eggs. We expected them to hatch this weekend, so we will see if anything happens. NONE of you prepared me for the stench that is known as broody poo!!

Oh my word is that stuff NASTY!! DH has been tending to the chickens lately (obviously) so I have not had a chance to get a photo of the newest chicken, but I will be sure to post it once I do!! Then we can go about naming him/her!! LOL JK.

I think I officially have a black thumb - at least when it comes to transplanting!! I had started my heirloom tomatoes & hot peppers indoors like they said and slowly moved them outside and before I could transplant them...they died!

Out of all the stuff we have planted (from seed or transplants) only some of it is thriving. The peas & corn & green beans are all doing well, even my squash and zucchini are doing well, but carrots, beets, spinach, watermelon, melon, pumpkin, peppers, tomatoes and even some of my herbs just up and died. I know some of it is because of the warm/cold front that affected them...and I also know that the cool weather crops didn't get enough cold weather to develop great roots and therefore thrive, but I am so discouraged!! One good thing - my potatoes (red and Irish) in my new potato box are doing VERY well and are already being covered up for the 3rd time!! So does anyone know where I can find (in the Johnston County area) some organic heirloom tomato & hot pepper plants?? <sigh> maybe I should just give up...if I buy them, they might die!!

I am so sorry for those of you who are dealing with losses & injuries!! My thoughts and prayers are with you all!!

The In-Laws arrive today so I will be quiet this weekend as I juggle time with them and being locked away in secrecy to "feed" DD.

Did I mention locking myself away was MY idea?!? It may be the only way to get some peace and quiet....LOL

Have a great weekend everyone. Best of luck at the flock swap as well as WCA!!

I have a feeling I am going to lose my favorite baby boy.. He has wry neck and despite Vitamin E and some electrolytes, just keeps getting worse. As of now, I am coming home every day during my online class to check on him. He is totally separated from the other babies. He stays in the house in a nice fresh clean brooder box unless he's just having a really good day, then he gets to go outside for a little bit. He is at, what I've heard, is the worst stage of wry neck. He tucks his head under his body a lot and spasms like he doesn't have any control. I have been doing all I can and it just doesn't seem to be working... We are going to get the name of a vet in Sun Valley and try to get him some help.

This is where he lives now..

This was one of his better days.

Sorry but I've had a rough week with this and school and other stuff... I just needed to vent... I know I know it's not the right place but I didn't know who else would understand.

I'm so sorry about your little one, I hope you can get him help. Some respond some don't. your doing all you can...

I have had good results using Poly-vi-sol (without iron) childrens liquid vitamins on a couple that had this problem. It takes a while but both showed improvement over a week or so and back to normal within a month. Sorry don't remember the dose off the top of my head. I found it on BYC someplace. Good luck with your boy.

Sorry my iPod won't let me quote but my Silkie is on Non-Medicated feed. Also, hes been like this for a while but not sure how long.. Bracing myself for the vet visit. He seems tO be much better today now that he's been totally alone (except for human company). I'm wondering if the other chicks were making him worse and that's why he hasnt been reacting to the meds. We got a different kind of Vitamin E last night just to see if that will help, keep your fingers crossed please?

Of the 19 eggs from the turkey's nest, 12 are now pipped or out, and tapping can be heard from two more. We'll see on the remaining five. Won't be able to tell if they're pure or crosses until they're dry. I had two BR toms and one RP tom on the property. These are all from the BR hen, so the odds are with us. I'd like to keep a few more hens, and maybe one more tom. Couldn't keep an extra tom with only one BR hen this year. If I can raise up enough, then I'll keep two trios, counting the ones I have now. Bob has a hurt foot/leg and I doubt is breeding the girls. Can't sort out what happened. No cuts, swelling, soreness on foot. Maybe he landed on it wrong when he flew off the henhouse roof one morning and pulled a tendon or something. At any rate...good hatching happening, with a very little help from me on getting through that membrane when they can't.
