couldnt post anything last night

Site was "under construction" yesterday. That is the message I got....

Well, it's been a bummer of a day. Despite Ms Bossy seeming fine this morning when I found her, this afternoon she was dead.
hit.gif
No signs of anything other than not coming for breakfast as usual. Her crop was partially filled and flacid this morning, not distended or hard. I considered doing a gross necropsy, but the fire ants had already found her and I didn't want to fight them. I will miss her bossy, demanding ways. I will miss her insisting that she get her feed from my hand. I will miss her teaching the dogs that chickens are never to be messed with. I will miss being able to walk out and pick her up for any visiting child to pet.

So long, Ms Bossy. You were a hellava bird.
Oh my!! Hollow I am so sorry to hear of your loss!!

I had issues yesterday as well...thought it was because of the weather and our location! Thank you for making me feel better...now I know I'm not the only one!! LOL

Chicken news: so my Splash Cochin (Olivia aka Mama) keeps stealing eggs from my Broody Maran, YET she isn't actually sitting on them. What a brat!! I think she is just one of those mean girls!! So now my poor Maran is sitting on 1 (maybe 2) egg - I didn't want to disturb her since Olivia keeps pestering her - while Belle (my Blue Cochin) is sitting on the rest!! LOL Do you know if I separate the girls in another week when the chicks hatch - will they share raising the chicks or will Belle have her lot and Dutchess have hers? Just curious. I plan to stuff more eggs under Dutchess when she is moved into the "broody coop" just in case. Non-chicken news: I am having a ball listening to DD#2 "talk" and DD#1 tell her she's too loud and that she's trying to sleep!! LOL.

ETA: I changed my signature for you all now!! Hehe

I stayed up late last night waiting for a call from my forgetful sister, so hubby put the dogs out so I could sleep in this morning. Only I couldn't. Shortly after he left, the barking started.

Now, these guys aren't big barkers. The puppy, Reilly, is the barkiest of the three, and he's still not a big barker. But this went on for several minutes, until I had pictures of dreadful things in my head. I got up and looked out the window. It was Jake! Jake never barks. And then I saw the tumbled puddle of buff feathers. Another chicken down!

I went outside (and it's a good thing we live off the road, because I didn't get dressed first!

) and found one of the hens stuck in a fence corner, upside down. It looked as if she was gasping her last. I picked her up, and found her neck was stuck in the fence weirdly. She hung limply in my arms and gasped.

I assumed she was not going to make it, but didn't want to put her anywhere outside after dealing with the fire ants on Ms Bossy yesterday, so I brought her into the house and put her in the empty brooding box. I left her there and about an hour later, I went to "collect the body". She was wide awake, and ****** off, and couldn't wait to get back outside.

I have no idea how she got tangled in the fence, but if Jake hadn't been so persistant to let me know, she would have been dead in that position, with her neck twisted through the fence and her body weight on it.

Hmmmm...thinking about it, she was in the corner made by the chicken moat and the compost bins. Hubby dumped the compost bucket this morning. She must have been trying to get into the compost, or something. Maybe went over the fence and lost her balance. I don't know.

This is a weird week.

In other news...I looked up Carolina Pride feeds and Goldsboro. The mill does sell directly to the public, but you have to call for prices. Their feed tags are available for viewing online, though. I'll try to remember to cal later today. Or someone else can......

good morning everyone
