Good HOT morning to you all!! I don't think I have ever lived in a place where the temp actually reached 100+ without a heat index - and even then, those days were rare!! I am not sure WHAT the kiddos and I are going to do...let alone the chickens! I have some sliced frozen squash I may hand out to them to help keep them cool as well as mist the deck (they like to dust bathe underneath the deck but are fearful of getting wet!!??). I will definitely be checking their waterers frequently and I may even put a small waterer/ice block under the deck where they are dusting so they do not have to walk across the yard to get to the nearest water source!! DD1 and I will probably spend some time in her pool (joy...at least I didn't get burnt yesterday!! YAY SPF 70!!) although I am hoping she will nap during the hottest part of the day so we are not out there!! Other than that, I am just going to hope and pray that my group makes it!! I am really worried about all the babies we have!!

Good luck everyone!!

Good morning, Everyone!

Was up late rearranging chickens last night, but I think they are all in the best places for heat and fox protection I can do. Put more bottles in the freezer this morning, when hubby thought of the old rabbit bottles. All the young ones are in hanging cages in the rabbit barn, which is the coolest place on the property, as the prevailing winds get funneled through it. Lots of ice made for them. We'll see how it goes.

Have the best day you can.

We used to have a very active and self feeding flock of 'Yard Birds' , even kept the horse pens cleaned up, no snakes, mice, wood roaches, not many flies!
woot.gif
Then the little old lady next door moved in with one of her kids, and they sold the house. The new people asked if we would sell them a couple of the yard birds for eating,
hu.gif
we said sure and thought nothing of it. Within a couple weeks we went from over 20 yard birds to about 4.

I never found any feather piles or any sign it was a 4 legged critter getting our birds.

Oh, no!!!! That's awful. The thieves around here are taking bicycles and lawn mowers (yesterday went into someone's backyard while she was at home - in broad daylight - and took their bikes!!! ) but I still worry about chicken thieves. There is a young family in a small house a street away from us and I watched one day as they pulled chicken after chicken out of the back of their car. It was actually funny as it was a VERY small car and I think they had about 8 live birds in there. I figured they were having a big gathering and wondered how they would be cooking them since they are from a foreign land. It also got me thinking about people (not necessarily them) coming and getting my girls...

Good morning folks

Hope everyone stays cool enough today

hate to say but it's been in the 80's here
a little cool to what we are use to at home

took the kids to the Oakland zoo yesterday
it's a nice zoo and the kids had a great time

hoping for no more losses for anyone
and you have a good day

Well,I miss feeding the birds enough now that the wooden feeding chickens toy ain't working any more. I might need to find me some kind of critter to feed. Good luck with the heat, hoping DH can handle the animals alright in the heat.

Just went out and checked on everyone and freshened water. A couple of birds panting, but most are lying up in the shade, as are the sheep. Nobody looks in extreme distress, thankfully. The new henhouse is surprisingly cool, despite the fact that it's not in shade. I'm impressed with it.

All looked ok on my way home, but that was at 3:30

Why is there a white & brown hunting type dog chained out front of your house, with a bucket and food pan?

It's 108 inside my shop/coop area, and 100 outside, I'm abit on the warm side here! Adding ice to water and hooking up as many fans as I can fit around these birds.
Good luck with your birds and other critters everybody!

My chickens are so hot, we moved the tractor to a spot where it gets more shade, so those seem better but hte babies, oh my the babies! I gave them fans an9 d in front of the little fan I put a baggie of ice water and they are fighting for position on it. Weather station in front yard says it's 102!
I have come to the conclusion reading you guys post that I don't like foxes!
I have a gender question thought the answer is probably wait a few weeks!
wink.png
My BO chicks are two weeks old today and I have 2 distinct feather patterns. The six that feathered fastest and evenest have a little stubby upright tail, the other 2 have uneven feather growth and no or a laying down stubby looking tail. I know the difference is gender but not sure which is which. I can post pics if that would help. Thanks, I love them all they are so sweet.

Have an awesome day and stay cool!

Well... so far I have lost one lion-head rabbit and 2 blue splash Ameraucanas to this heat....
somad.gif
we left and went to Tractor Supply, to pick up some feed.... get back and find the dead bodies...
sad.png
and they hadn't been dead long... as the bodies were still quite floppy.

So, I started down the line... spraying everybody down with a spray bottle filled with water... my female turkeys followed me down the line, so I would spray them.... LoL.... they liked it.
cool.png
Most of my chickens did not care for the spraying... but some of them actually enjoyed it.

I sprayed my Quail and my bunnies, too.

It was 110* on our enclosed back porch, where we keep our brooder boxes.... so we had to bring them in and put them in the laundry room. Got them inside just in time... as some of the chicks had fell out... but once they cooled down... they started acting better. Poor babies.

I will be headed back out to spray everybody down again, in a few.
big_smile.png
Gotta keep 'em cool.

Everyone keep yourselves hydrated if you must go out in this heat and take care of yourselves... it is just too danged hot. They just said, on the news that it's gonna be 107* tomorrow.
