I don't think that she will take care of them if she does not hatch them. I read that if a broody spends too much time, to put her out for her own good. As for the eggs she is on... can you incubate them, for her health, and get her out of the nest and moving around? I am headed into Goldsboro twice today, but can make a drive in the early evening if you need.

NH.......so sorry about the kittens and chick
hugs.gif

a hawk or owl will take small kittens and puppies
as well as other small animals.....like chicks and rabbits

as for the broodie???? if the food is right there
where she can reach it while sitting,
she will eat and drink as she sits as she needs.
For all of a week to go I would just let her
finish the hatch and then move her out.......if
you can and she will quit sitting. Some hens just
won't quit so easily.........good luck.

Well Im a little disappointed. All four of the baby wrens living in our petunias are gone. Flew away while I was at work.. I normally get to watch them make their sputtery first attempts at flight but I guess its good that they figured it out quickly this year.

Bhep, What are Seramas like? Temperament-wise I mean..

Hey Folks,

I just moved to Chapel Hill from Northern California and I was hoping to get chickens again. Does anyone have any advice for someone unfamiliar with this new climate? What are some absolute musts for a coop in these parts?
And also: are there any good places for feed near CH/Carrboro? Or reclaimed lumber?

I have the truck fixed to take birds to WCA, but someone told me to do open mesh fronted boxes, and another told me that I had to have wood crates. I have plastic mesh and boxes, but not wood crates. If this is the requirement... where can I get about 40?

Only requirement is that birds are not in solid cardboard boxes (except baby chicks) buyers need to be able to easily see the birds in the boxes, so open front with mesh should be just fine, I've done this before and seen many others do it and had no issues.

Here you need coops that can be ventilated well in summer heat but can be insulated enough for winter. Its a balance game we don't get terribly cold at all in winter, and for sure summer is the hardest on birds here. I am not familar enough with your area to help on your quest for feed and lumber though :/ Hopefully someone else will chime in from your area.
