Wow! De Ja Vu all over again. We're doing the exact same thing. We live over near Statesville, just about 7 miles to the east and we have a little place that backs up to the Rowan County line. We're doing the Square Foot Gardening now too. We've had eight big raised boxes 4'x10'x12" for the past three years and we've grown some really great lettuce, onions, beets, potatoes, asparagus, etc. in them. This year we've added 12 more 4'x4'x6" boxes and doing everything the Mel Bertholomew way. Teresa's had me to move the same ton of dirt four times now. We bought some good top soil, mixed it with compost, vermiculite, peat moss, and rotted cow manure and filled the new boxes. Nows she's got them segmented off with twine and she's putting in tomatoes today. We're putting 2 tomatoes per 4'x4' box with a trellis between them and we'll train them up that. Then there're be some beans, beets, carrots, whatever in the other squares. She may add some squash and cucumbers to some of the boxes but I've got a feeling they will get too big and shade out the other plants. We've already got the big boxes filled with potatoes, romaine, butter crunch, and other things. The only things that won't go in a box will be corn and okra.
We've planted blueberries around two sides of the garden and we're going to add some blackberry and raspberry whips to too. And just today we went up to Brushy Mountain Bee Company and picked up our bees. We've got one hive now and a second in process. We're going back up in early June to get the second package of bees.
