How is everyone doing with this little cold snap?
My ducks just moved outside and I am a little worried about them. I gave them extra bedding and hope they are smart enough to use it! Looking forward to the warmer temps again.
Anyone have gardens planted? We will start tomorrow. My daughter wants something to do.

Yep! Got our garden well under way. We do the square foot gardening. We started last year. It was SO easy. All of our plants went bonkers! We even added blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries to our yard.

Wow! De Ja Vu all over again. We're doing the exact same thing. We live over near Statesville, just about 7 miles to the east and we have a little place that backs up to the Rowan County line. We're doing the Square Foot Gardening now too. We've had eight big raised boxes 4'x10'x12" for the past three years and we've grown some really great lettuce, onions, beets, potatoes, asparagus, etc. in them. This year we've added 12 more 4'x4'x6" boxes and doing everything the Mel Bertholomew way. Teresa's had me to move the same ton of dirt four times now. We bought some good top soil, mixed it with compost, vermiculite, peat moss, and rotted cow manure and filled the new boxes. Nows she's got them segmented off with twine and she's putting in tomatoes today. We're putting 2 tomatoes per 4'x4' box with a trellis between them and we'll train them up that. Then there're be some beans, beets, carrots, whatever in the other squares. She may add some squash and cucumbers to some of the boxes but I've got a feeling they will get too big and shade out the other plants. We've already got the big boxes filled with potatoes, romaine, butter crunch, and other things. The only things that won't go in a box will be corn and okra.

We've planted blueberries around two sides of the garden and we're going to add some blackberry and raspberry whips to too. And just today we went up to Brushy Mountain Bee Company and picked up our bees. We've got one hive now and a second in process. We're going back up in early June to get the second package of bees.

Oh Wow! Now you make me feel bad. lol
I got tired of the hand tilling and bought a gas motor one.
Within an hour of buying it I had broke it.

Took it back to the store and have to wait till Monday for them to fix it.
Came home and started to hand till it again.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone live in Maggie Valley NC

We are looking at a restaurant that is for sale there. Just wondering how the weather is and if my girls will be allowed there. It sounds like a great place.

The zoning laws for actually owning chickens are set by the town/city that you live in. If you are out of town then you can do what you want.

You can sell eggs from eating with only a few rules. Mark cartons are ungraded. If using recycled cartons you are supposed to cover all the grades and weights from the original distributor. As long as you don't sell more then 30 dozen per week you don't need any kind of license.

If you want the sell hatching eggs, then you either do it illegally or get a tested out to get NPIP certified.

To sell birds you need a permit from the state. They don't do any kind of inspection or anytime. All you do is all the state vet and request a license to sell poultry. That one if free. The chick dealer is $10 and there are others that you can get as well.

There is no link for the poultry dealer license, but here is the one for chick dealer: http://www.agr.state.nc.us/vet/chkdealr.htm
Other
links: http://www.agr.state.nc.us/vet/VetLicenses.htm

Thanks Matt

We would be moving to NC from Maryland so just chicking. I am having my flock tested and NPIP certified before we move. I already have my "packers "license to sell eggs in Maryland. Hopeing to find a small farm or a farmhouse with land near Maggie Valley.
