North Carolina

good luck selling eggs. I cant where I am at. Either people dont want them or they have their own birds. I give a few to the old lady across the road but thats it. I seen where others have tried to sell eggs down the road but also had the same luck as me

I only sell eggs for $2 a dozen and have more customers then I can deal with. Over the last few months I have gotten several more customers. Alot of other sellers have had to raise their prices. I need to, but am trying not to.

If I only count my eggs I stay below the 30 dozen per week. The problem is that I also buy eggs from 2 others for $1.50 per dozen and resell them. If the state finds out I may be screwed. Wait maybe I shouldn't post that, everyone shhhhh. The people I buy eggs from also freerange their birds and feed the same I do. They do know I resell for a bit more, but they are good with it since they don't have to deal with customers.

Hey all
I have been busy but stalking and trying to keep up with all the reading.. you miss a day and your 10 pages behind. I have be remodeling the yard and house and the coop. changed my feeder and watering system. converted a toilet float valve to a auto chicken waterer.
trying to get the house all done before the busy season starts for me at the end of feb. Added two marans and another americauna to the flock I will post some pics tomorrow
night!

Really? I can't keep up with my egg customers. That's why I was enlarging the flock last year. And on top of that, they told me I was selling too cheaply, and insisted I increase my price. So I did!
How much do you charge?? Are these local or out of towners. I find the locals love my prices, 2:00 a dozen while the out of towner just give me $5 and I get them change and get funny looks and unusually they give me a dollar back. My normal customers know if feed goes up too high, so does my prices. $2.25 or $2.50 is a possiblity maybe this spring if feed keeps going up. As I post somewhere before, I now have 2 sets of prices. Local and out of towners. It's that **** karma thing again... Make enough to feed the animals and if lucky a little more and good things happen, like no loss of any chickens etc... Really I guess it depends on the area you live in (seems almost like I am the only one who has chickens in the area) and how well everyone is doing. I have a lady with cancer, that I sell her a dozen for what ever she has on hand if anything, normally a buck and change. One family had some hard times and I just gave them eggs. Once things got better, they started paying me back even though I told them they didn't have to. Karma, man, it works... and no I am not a liberal hippie, laughs Just from Cali.

Chicken dad, good luck on the your sales. it's also a great way to meet new people...

Good Morning, Happy People!

Holiday is over; back to work we go!

Tick, I was charging $2, too. But now it's three. Our customers are our work colleagues. I have several people at work who are regulars, and hubby can sell all he takes in. He simply puts them in the communal fridge with a money box, and people use the honor system. They always go and people want more.

Time to feed the critters and get ready to work!
Enjoy our day!

Chicken dad- a friend of mine has a post on this thread Post#22567southpawtech- He had his flock inspected for selling eggs I have not discussed this with him so dont no exactly what it is abt -I think theres a link on his post abt It
As abChicken said, we just had our Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) inspection done. AWA http://www.animalwelfareapproved.org/standards/layinghens-2012/ is a nationwide voluntary certification, and not North Carolina specific. You still have to comply with the North Carolina Egg Law http://www.ncagr.gov/fooddrug/food/egglaw.htm We are not going to be really concerned with the Egg Law until our production reaches 30 dozen or more a week on a consistent basis. AWA certification is more beneficial from a marketing aspect. It proves to your customers that you treat your flocks humanely, give them the best living conditions and that your birds are truly "Free Range" and "Cage Free". We built our coop and run to AWA standards before we applied. My wife refers to it as "Chicken Disneyland". Dust bathing, foraging, tree roosting are just a few of the daily activities for our flock. We even pulled the walls and chicken wire off of the old coop, put it in the middle of the field and turned it into a chicken gazebo complete with a feeder and flock block. My neighbors ask when the chickens are getting satellite TV.

My neighbors ask when the chickens are getting satellite TV.

DURING A GOOD SUMMER laying Season my chickens start demanding a trip to the Bahamas and a big screen TV with the 24 hour Chicken World playing.
I tell them maybe on the TV but the trip to the Bahamas is out. Plus I know they would never make it off the tarmack before they were all captured and became dinner down there...

I will check out the link and see how close I come and maybe even try it. Dust bathing, foraging, tree roosting are just a few of the daily activities for our flock.

Tree roosting?? sounds like chicken boot camp.. Now ladies, up that tree, now down, now up. come on Mabel, get your fat behind up there. Now move it over, time for your field foraging exercises. 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4.... Dust bath hup......

It amazing how we end up being the slaves to our new masters, our chickens.

I don't want to say this, but our Co-op buys our extra eggs for $5/doz and when we get duck eggs they have offered to buy those at $6/half dozen!! I will say that's because we buy our feed from an "approved" source and they know our set up and therefore know that we free range as well as supplement with soy-free organic feed. Even if we were to sell ALL of our eggs...I doubt we would ever break even with the cost of feed prices. I may have to see if they'll also take guinea eggs...IF I could ever find them!! LOL.

I am very VERY bummed today. I had a call in to a company to deliver us some bulk topsoil and leaf mulch...was waiting on his call for WEEKS now. He calls (of course while I am in the middle of a diaper change) and tells me I am out of his delivery area then hangs up. SERIOUSLY?? Can someone explain to me how a company can say they serve the triangle and surrounding areas, but I am not a surrounding area?? I don't get it. I am not even going to mention his RUDENESS, I am just trying to figure out why he couldn't have called me back right away and just apologized but I was out of his delivery range. I just don't get it. Now I am back on the hunt for a company that will deliver a truckload (30cu yds) of both topsoil and mulch to us and NOT cost me my first born...well, because I've grown rather fond of her!!

I think I just need to rent a dump truck!! LOL...who can drive it for me??

Chicken question: when would you all suggest I begin to slowly incorporate the youngsters into the flock with the older chickens? I know they are still a bit too young (they're almost 3 months old....2/7) but at what age should I? Right now they can be seen and interacted with by the other chickens...I just didn't know how things should progress. Someone PLEASE tell me when my guineas will literally fly the coop and start roosting in the trees?? They are being naughty and I would love it for them to start sleeping up there!!

Have a great day everyone...it's one day closer to the weekend!!
