Think an owl killed Henry. Anybody knows how they leave the carcass? His neck and head was pretty much gone,
. No eyes left. Feathers everywhere. Someone that traps mention Owl, he said they knock the prey around until it is hurt then kill. Happened between 8:00am and 2:00pm. They have been hanging around some. Scared them off about a month ago.

ok if its gonna be this cold it might as well snow so the kiddos can have fun and warm up the air some

well I think my girls have figured out that its winter. I had been getting a dozen or so every two days, two days ago I got 1 egg, yesterday 3 eggs. I guess two warm winters in a row and I have gotten use to getting eggs in the winter instead of nothing like all the other years.

have a great day

It could have been a red-tailed hawk. Last year a red-tailed got one of my old flock of GC's and that's how I found her carcass. We had just laid down for a Sunday afternoon nap when I heard the chickens raising a ruckus out back. I normally don't let them out until dusk but for some reason I let them out earlier. When I went to investigate all the noise I saw the hawk on the ground behind the run. I got my gun and went to scare it away since I don't believe in killing birds of prey. I fired and it took off for the woods. When I got to the carcass the head was gone and feathers were everywhere. I doubt an owl would come out in the daytime to take a chicken. There's a nesting pair of red-tails behind the house and across the creek and they have a clear view of the property but I haven't had any problems with them since then.

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

Late today, since I have no classes. I waited until the sun was starting to come up to go feed instead of doing it in the dark. Everyone weathered the cold well. We've got heat lamps on the calves sleeping area, and bedded it down well in hay. All the older chicks got moved in together, from five months down to three months. More warmth in the building with them all together. They won't fit when they're grown, but for now it works fine. The babies are still in the house. And the rabbits have plastic resting mats to keep them off the wire, and hide boxes over the mats to give them a place to retain their body heat. So everyone stayed warm last night.

I've got some Buff Brahmas going to lockdown this afternoon. We'll see what the weekend brings. Next week German New Hampshires go to lockdown. Then I think my Ideal order will be here about the time the turkeys go to lockdown.

Goodness. I'm turning into Beth.

Enjoy your day, everyone!

Lost one bird to the cold, a frizzled Serama hen. Brought her in this morning but she didn't make it.
