WELCOME to the new folks!!

Okay...guessing time...what is your verdict on my mystery MUTT chick (buff orp roo x not sure which hen!! LOL) ...it is approximately 4-5 months old. Boy or girl?? This was the closest I could get as the guineas kept chasing him/her away and I had to zoom in as best I could with my phone/camera. I am guessing rooster...only because ALL of the chicks I have from that hatch are roosters...lol

So......I get home and guess what......... the dern thing turns on right away

I'm not turning it off until spring now. Now to get this living room finished painted, then it's time to go buy some new furniture. It's like they say, in like a snail out like a hare $$$$

x 2 Pullet
Really??

So my hatch ratio (for that group) is 9 roos:1 pullet...I'll it...I guess!! LOL. At least the roosters have been predator bait (they're scheduled for freezer camp this spring anyway)...I can't believe I have ONE pullet!! That brings my totals up to (so we can compare with Beth)
15 pullet chicks (2 months old)
2 pullet & 5 roosters (approximately 4-5 months old - including my blue sex link rooster who looks more like 1 yr old size wise!!)
1 Rooster (Tyrone...age - unknown...lol)
3 POL pullets - can't remember their age (9mo, I think) - these are the freezer camp survivors (because they were girls!!)
3 "old" hens (almost 2 years old now) who are on a laying strike!! BOO
5 ducks - 4 girls & 1 HANDSOME fellow!!
8 guineas - gender unknown, but I am guessing we have 3 males and 5 females...yeah
Grand Total: 37... why does that seem like it PALES in comparison to Beths?? LOL.

Glad to hear the heater is working for you Luke!! At least you don't have to fix it!!

Wonder what the issue was?? LOL

Boy do I feel for my kids and teenager chickens. The wind chill has been killer with their water never really melting much from ice to icy mush. At one point I kind of mentioned that they sure would like to come in. (pictures 25 chicks in the laundry room) Well, the missus told me in no uncertain terms, they could come in and I could go out and sleep in their coop. mmm, don't think so. They have feathers and down, me??? Just a jacket and skin. bad deal all away around.... So I again, put down water, plus one shielded from the wind and will just have to hope for the best. I know, they will be ok, but their my kids!!!! I am their alpha Rooster..

For those west of us, you all must be colder than heck. Looks like not til after 11ish tomorrow will it get above freezing around here. I really hope the weather people are way off.. The good thing is the wind is slowing down, it's still cold but not as cold.

just call me a worry wart...

First winter with young chickens....

Luke, glad the heater works again.

Home, were the chicks ice skating????
I hate when oldtimers strikes me and I do something dumb like that....

Good luck to us and our animals all during tonight and tomorrow. My horse has not left his barn since I put him up this afternoon. He is kind of smarter than I am.... Cats are in their boxes, the dogs in their houses and me, I am still defrosting... The missus, well she is so smart she never even went out today. Did something about cleaning the house.. She don't do cold very well......

rambling, over...
I think I feel fingers... yay!!!!!

Long day today, and I'm tired. First exam today, I get to spend the weekend grading. Well, tomorrow. Saturday I have to drive to Georgia. Sunday I get to rest, maybe.

Then it warms up! I'm planning on dusting everybody down, clipping the wings on a few adventuresome pullets, and cleaning out the Juvenile Detention Center for the batch due in mid-Feb. The six that are indoors I'm just planning on keeping in for a while. Hubby is shaking his head at that. I have always brooded outside, regardless of weather, without losses. But I've never had so few chicks in a batch before. The smallest group I've ever done has been 25. We'll see how it all works out

I do dread the day that DH makes me count, I think that day I will forget how to count like the kiddos do when homework rolls around

.
Are you going to count the birds at someone else's house also, or just happen to 'forget' about them?
