Good Morning, Happy People!

I haven't been outside yet, but I'm betting it's all frozen over. Hubby went to lock up the birds and retrieve the calf bucket last night, and he said the yard was a sheet of ice. Feeding will be fun. I may wait until daylight for safety.

I hope you all have a safe and warm day!

Good Morning everyone!! Well, this weather reminds me of back home! More times than naught when they would predict snow, the folks in Ohio would get freezing rain! I am glad everyone made it home safely!! My husband left work "early" (he was the last one to leave) and said he was annoyed at the people driving so slow. I smacked him and told him to be thankful they were being cautious, unlike our home where people think they can drive over ice/sleet/snow so long as they have a 4x4! I am happy he made it home AND offered to lock up chickens. It was hard for me to carry water out to them, as our deck was a sheet of ice and, I was terrified I would fall down the steps!!
-Hollow - you be careful, NO falling!!

I am truly baffled at my chickens -most stayed outside in the worst of it, yet hid when we actually had giant snowflakes!! (Of course that lasted a whole 10 minutes). The ducks were walking icicles and I was worried about some of the 2 month olds, but they seemed to be the smartest...they only came out when they heard the feed bin and went right back under cover! I am hoping everyone has survived the cold/icy weather! I think I will make a pot of porridge for everyone outside as a warm treat! I wonder how they'd like just the steel cut oats to nibble on? LOL...still some Irish Oatmeal will be a treat for them...maybe I'll throw in some mealworms or something else...raisins?? I gave some quick oats to the chicks as a treat; while the ducks were given some warm (leftover) cornbread and seemed to really enjoy that! The guineas...well they were in the neighboring field, so they were left out of treat giving!! I do NOT understand this weather!! It's suppose to be in the 70's on Tuesday!! Well, until we deice/thaw/melt...please be safe & try to stay warm everyone!! Praying for no losses!!

Yes, Ma'am! Careful is my middle name. I try very hard to avoid falling!

My planned method to walk out on my back patio without breaking my neck, sprinkle bird seed out to give me some traction. Then the wild birds will have food later on and easy clean up. Salt is hard on the pads of dogs so I don't want to put any out for my over-grown pup. Plus, the price of bird seed doesn't go up when winter weather hits us a couple times in the season. LOL!!

Good morning folks

As cold as it is and I don't like being cold
since it painful on the joints, I remind myself
that we need the cold like this to help reset
nature and balance. I will be thankful for less
insect life next summer.

I like the idea of using bird seed for traction grit
but my problem would be if the birds left any I
would be adding to my weed population

I need to go to a few places today but I do think
I will wait for a bit to give the slick a chance to
melt away.....anyone else going out, be safe please

hope everyone has good day

The sprinkle method worked.

Made three trips out to the coop. There was more than a quarter of an inch on top of the trampoline that covers the run. I'm sure glad that the run is covered and that I put those bales of wood shavings in the run yesterday. It sure made it where the ladies and my gents didn't freeze their poor little feet off in this weather.

As for the weeds, I don't ever worry about it. If it is green outside I'm happy! In fact, a few years ago, we had bald spots that refused to grow grass so we started putting bird seed there and now the spots are smaller.

Got everyone fed, but had to be very careful. The whole place is a sheet of ice. The steps are iced, the ramp to the feed room is iced. It's not thick; just a skim of ice...enough to be dangerous.

I have Buff Brahmas hatching today! Yay!

I have wondered since I joined BYC why people brood indoors. For ten years I have brooded outdoors with no losses, even when I had to shovel snow off the door to the Juvenile Detention Center to get in. But now I've figured it out. Up until recently, all my brooding was done in big batches. Minimum of 25 and more likely 100. Plenty to add body warmth to the brooder lamps. But now I've got a pair of BOs that are six weeks old, three more chicks that are a week old, and up to four hatching today. Small groups of babies. I can't put them out in JDC. The older two batches are in a Rubbermaid tub, but that won't last long. So today I'll go shopping for things to set up indoor brooding. And I'll try the horse bedding pellets. I've been just using hand towels from the dogs (the dogs have their own set of towels from Sam's), since I do a lot of bleach loads anyway. But that's not feasible long-term. Gotta learn a whole new way of doing things!l

just found this thread. I live in Hickory, NC. Not in city limits, closer to Mountain View. Don't have my chicks yet, but getting everything ready and they should arrive the 2nd week of February. Can hardly wait.
