Scottcaddy, did you get chased down by a cow or something?

I don't have those kinds of bad feelings about any cows. A goat would still be pretty cool though, less space needed, but ours kept eating the hubby's apple trees.

Boy was he hot around the collar.

I think the cows had bad memories of me.

I had help from a little sister. The neighbor called and said that our rabbits were spooking his cattle, so we went (*chased*) and rounded them up, to get them back on the right piece of property. We were helping.

he...he...hee.... I think our pigs were fond of us too! ...and the chickens.... SHoot I think all the animals liked us, as long as we wern't eating them...

NH, do you read the NC Agricultural Review? There are often bred Jerseys in there. Sure you want that much milk? You're looking at several gallons per day. That's a lot of milk, butter and cheese. A lot. Plus, cattle are herd animals and need a companion. Chickens won't cut it!

What??  You mean I can't count Levi as a companion??  LOL  I do know they are herd animals...we're thinking about a goat or a sheep, even a steer as a companion...not sure yet.  As for the milk...I know I wouldn't use it all, but I also plan to let the gal take care of her calf and just milk the extra (which would probably give us more than what we could use)...also I do know of a family that is really struggling financially (and they buy raw milk a lot) so I would love to "share" the extra!!  I am not ALLOWED to read the Ag Reviews...Dh is fearful that I would end up buying an entire farm and we'd run out of places to put them!!  LOL
Different species may or may not be companionable. A goat or sheep in with a cow will require another goat or sheep. (Not one of each!) The cow may or may not be content.

Yeah Scott, I remember being trapped between a cow and the wall when she decided to lean on me when I was milking her! I also remember being barefoot and having one of them step on my foot, high up on the arch, and then sllloooowwwwly pivot on that foot. I think she was pivoting to get away from the screaming noise in her ear.....

Still, I love cows. But they are a lot of mess and a lot of work. I wouldn't recommend them as a starting milk animal for someone new to homesteading. They're more something to grow into. My opinion, of course, and YMMV.

Hello everyone. Went by Southern States in Statesville today and they have their list of chicks for the year. I tried to get a list of what they have coming in. Here is what they have posted on the board. According to the board the first ones arrive around the 28th of Feb. Most of the chickens are pullets and roosters and most of the ducks are straight run. Hope this helps any of you looking for something new this year.
