we could order it by the ton and get a really good deal have it shipped to a central location and move it from there.. It may be worth it for alot of us. I am waiting on a response I emailed them yesterday. Probably won't hear back till tomorrow.
Jon

group buys work well If we can get enough people. Feeds are get more expensive weekly. Alfalfa pellets are 19.50 a 50lb bag here and steamed oats are 17.50 If we could get a not gmo no soy product cheap it would be worth it to me and my family for sure
I AGREE!! I started paying $22 for a bag of organic soy-free/gmo-free feed...but with the cost of skyrocketing feed prices, the last purchase we made, the feed was up to $32/ 50# bag!! When you are feeding quite a bit (not as many as most) - we have about 25 birds, that feed doesn't last long - even though they are free ranged!! Although, I am not sure how far Wilmington is from Middlesex, Johnston County (although I am closer to Selma/Wendell). Still, for me, $25/50# bag is still a bit cheaper than what I am paying. Anyone know how long you can store unopened feed for?? If we were to order a bunch, I would worry about rodents getting into it if we were to store the bags unopened and if you open it...would it start to go bad?

Enjoy WCA if any of you go!! I'm looking for a GOOD producing, SWEET dairy cow (in the future) if you see one there...DON'T tell me!! LOL, if you know of someone that raises Jerseys and may be willing to sell a young female (and also willing to help "stud" her on an as needed to keep the milk coming basis) that's not TOO far from us...THAT you can tell us!!

I know...I'm asking for a miracle, but I figured I could at least post it!! As payment...I'll make you a batch of cheese from the fruits of her labor!!

I'll even make some cinnamon bread cake (made some last night...DELICIOUS!!) - or ANYTHING you request (so long as I know HOW...lol).

Have a great day everyone!!

yeah its gotten crazy. I am feeding 15 now and adding a few more here in a couple of weeks... I am not sure how long we could store thats why we need a couple of people in on a group buy so we arent buying and storing 50 bags of feed

the organic feed here is up to 25 a bag and rising. Selma isnt that far. it would be worth it if we can get it cheap enough.

There is NO WAY I could pay those prices with all these birds!

I have stores feed in Barrels when buying by the ton, but even then if we have high enough heat the moisture will cause condensation within the barrels if not in a climate controlled space. I get what he is saying about the group order. We did not keep an entire ton here, we purchased and split off sections by pro-rated cost with friends and family.

Ton = 40 bags at 50lbs ea.

We ordered chicks this way as well. I ordered , and added 4 other orders to mine so that the box would be full, when they got here the price for shipping was shared, and the birds kept each other warm, a definite plus for me. I am not a big fan of shipping chicks. TSC had them and the bantams were pitiful, I asked about them and they said that the employees were walking around with them in the pockets to warm them up, because they got to cold, and I could not bear anymore loss for the day so I bought a fruit tree and left the chicks there. Still may check back another day...

Way off the rails there....

In chicken news, we only have a light dusting on the ground for the birds to play in, 4 more chicks hatched over night. They are not done yet, I am still seeing peeping. I have to really watch this bator, the chicks get morin around in there and the temp jumps on it. The fluffy ones look happy in the brooder. Say a little prayer I have some due in the coming weeks that belong to one of the Americauna's that got hit a few days ago in there. I also saved two that were in the nest in that run.

Have a great day all!

i can buy a 50 lb bbag of scratch grain or corn for 12 bucks but thats just part of my feeding ration :( i also feed wild bird seed and laying mash... so nevermind i dont get a good deal...lol

NH, do you read the NC Agricultural Review? There are often bred Jerseys in there. Sure you want that much milk? You're looking at several gallons per day. That's a lot of milk, butter and cheese. A lot. Plus, cattle are herd animals and need a companion. Chickens won't cut it!
