Okay, I know cedar shvings aren't good for chickens, but my two coops that seem to be the worst infested with mites are 8ft long by 4ft and 4ft high and fully open on 3 side. I have been reading that the oils and aroma given off by cedar, can kill/repel mites, but I also know it can affect chickens, bit I was thinking that since these two coop are well ventilated, that maybe adding a bag of cedar to each one for a couple days might not be a bad idea? :idunno what do ya'll think??

I'm in Johnston Co, NC. Nice to see there's a lot of local folks here!
Right now I'm on an incubation frenzy!! I have Pekin duck eggs that I sell for hatching, and I have some EE chicks that I'm selling as well. Once my egg production picks up (because my hens are lazy in the winter, and that's fine with me) I'll have Americauna chicks/egg, as well as gaming eggs, Comet/Am, and Black Jersey Giant/Am eggs. Once my guineas start laying I'll probably be looking to sell some of those too. I'm just starting to get into the raising and selling aspect of chickens, even though I've been a flock owner for about 3yrs now.

Funny story: First let me premise by saying that I MUST be blind as a bat without my glasses despite what the DMV says...okay, I'll paint the picture for you... I'm in the kitchen, making bread with one baby on my hip (she's still clingy and fussy from being sick on Saturday) and another begging me to read her a story while sitting on the rug in front of the Fridge. I peak out the window (habit) and see this brown bird perched on the run of the coop. Panic sets in - my ducks are loose (chickens are still under lock and key until we get the laying down solid!!) and I don't want a hawk trying to have duck l'orange for lunch!! I put a now screaming child in the play pen, grab my glasses, grab the rifle (filled with nothing but pellets), open the door and.... Yeah

Apparently Cadbury was getting a bit TOO friendly with the girls in the pool today so one sought solace atop the run. Perched with her back to me, Reece looked like a hawk and I am ashamed to say that I couldn't tell until AFTER my heart was in my throat and my glasses securely in place.

I was just glad it was an innocent mistake!! Although, next time...I think I'm using that pellet shot on the stupid cat that finds it necessary to dart outside each time I open the door....

I should have let the Guinea Mafia take a go at her before getting shipped off!! Stupid cat!!

Good info on feeding and free ranging. Tells the amount and how much protein needed of feed to produce eggs etc..

Love it! I'm going to be putting my grow-outs/teenagers out in the goat field and have to find a way to keep the goats out of the teenager feed but still have plenty for them to eat.

Plenty to eat is so important for good growth and egg laying! Fat girls lay lots of eggs!! ;)

Figured I would share, since we were just talking about this.
Also..fermenting the feed helps too.
s far as a goat proof chicken feeder...good luck !

Goat proof chicken feeder idea. My friend had an old wire dog kennel, she cut two holes, one near the front and one near the pack, and sunk two heavy duty metal post through it, so the goats couldn't tip it. Then she hung 2 7lbs feeders inside it, and drilled a piece of ply wood over the top, securing it with heavy duty bolts. She said the goats rub on it, shove on it, jump on it and so far they haven't gotten in. She said the holes are big enough for a chicken to stretch their heads through but she cut a couple taller holes for birds with big comes, and a couple wider holes too.

Edited for my horrible typing skills.
