Hi everyone! I've been so busy, and on top of everything else, got bitten by a tick and am being treated for Lyme disease. Glad to be up and around again.

I have NOT gotten caught up yet on here - I have over 130 posts to read - so forgive me for not responding to any news or anything I was included in, etc. I will get caught up later today (I hope).

In the meantime, I am helping a friend look for a couple of female Mallards. Anyone?

Have a great day!

Does anyone have advice for a waterer? I know with the hot summer months upon us, I am looking for a better way to water my girls. With just the waterer that we currently have (which was purchased for temporary use, there is sometimes some slime {that I always clean off} build up when I go to fill it. It may hold a pint of water - that isn't enough.

So - what would you recommend?

We have 3 of those big 3.5 gallon water jug things from TSC. They have a hook where you can hang them, we just sit them on a few bricks to raise a little. They work really well and hold a lot. I just rinse them out every night and refill for the next day.

I cut a PVC pipe in half like a hot dog bun and put the leaky end of my yard hose in it and plugged the other end and ran a small hose back to the garden for excess water. I also have big 5 gallon waterers, but when using those I clean them with bleach at least once a week if not more.

I had a PVC pipe with chicken nipples connected to a 5 gal bucket. Love love it! Keeps water fresh and clean! I also put big hunks of ice in the bucket in the mornings once its hot outside hoping to keep the water cool for them :)

Can I see a picture?

I want something that is low(er) maintenance (than perhaps cleaning out a waterer every week). Our family lives out of state, and I am looking for something that may be a little more less maintenance (for our neighbor) if we go out of town this summer. I have seen the 5 gallon bucket/pvc/chicken nipples, but the one that I saw was pretty complex, there has to be something easier.

Thanks for all of your help

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

It's been a busy morning, and this is the first time I've stopped since I got up!

Here is my Automatic watering system. The far side was being wormed in this pic, and I needed to measure the water, so couldn't use auto. But it's simply a 60 gallon pickle drum with a splitter on it. Each hose goes to an automatic dog water dish, on a concrete block to keep most mess out. Easy to brush out and dump regularly, uses less water, and the chickens like it. I thought of it when the ones in the yard kept using the one I was trying for the dogs...which they didn't like! We are working on these for the other chicken house, too. I've just the drum with an open water pan there for so long, but we're going to run dog bowls inside it, too.
