North Carolina

Just for the record, my first was 23 days late and still had to be induced. And took 36 hours after induction to show up! The docs were sure they'd miscalculated, but hubby was only home four days, so I knew when that baby started! Point being, babies come when they're ready. Your son will be along soon, no worries!

And where else to store the man's animal's stuff but in the man's room? Sounds exactly right to me! Around here all the animals belong to the woman, so the stuff is in my space!
They aren't my birds!!! LOL If they were we'd be eating most of them and only feeding the ones that giving us eggs. On that note we have a hen or two that developed the taste for their eggs! I guess I have to convince her to let me eat them.

On the baby front: she's at an appt right now wanting to get induced and blah blah blah....I'm not happy but it's not my decision.

LOL...for those of you wanting a play by play description of the life-altering "vacation" with my nieces and nephew here, I am sorry to disappoint you. I have just learned that they threw such a fit over having to come here where it's "boring, there's NOTHING to do AND she makes us work!" that my sister is apparently going to take them to Florida instead.

I shall firmly apply the duct tape over my mouth so I don't risk saying anything mean/hateful or anything else...PLEASE feel free to rant/rave FOR me!!

I will only say I am NOT ashamed for teaching my children how to work, the value of hard work, how NOTHING in life is free and if you want to eat/have a place to live/nice things you MUST work to pay for those things. If that makes me mean or boring or what not, so be it, I LOVE my life and wouldn't trade it for anything...THEY are the ones missing out...not us!! <end of G rated rant...sorry>

Hollow - you are welcome to use that photo!! Let me know if you want me to email you a better copy (not sure how good the quality is from here and such)!!

Luke - I am sure the GF is miserable...this weather has been SO unforgiving for those of us expecting!! She's probably also a bit anxious to meet the little fellow too!! I had a wise woman tell me once, "no woman has ever been pregnant for life" - that was her answer to me being anxious!! LOL...I will say two weeks later, I saw in the news of a woman who was "pregnant" for 40 years because the baby fused to her in some rare medical mystery and she finally at age 60 or something had what she thought was a tumor removed and come to find out it was a baby that had fused to her...anyway, because of that, I'd recommend NOT saying the whole pregnancy can't last forever bit...LOL

We're praying all goes well and in the right time!!

NH, I'd love an emailed copy! [email protected], when you get a minute. Thanks so much!

My kids always had chores, too. Chores that they had to do because they lived there, like clean their room and pick up after themselves, and chores that they could earn money by doing, like picking up dog poop! We wanted them to learn both aspects of life. And most of my neices and nephews don't like coming here because it's boring. The exception is my sister's daughter, who should have been mine. She has already scheduled her visit this summer, is looking forward to WCA, and loves doing chicken chores...and she's 17 now! Love that girl!

Hollow: Sent!! :D Also, thank you for the "pep talk"...I was getting down about it as I haven't seen my sister in almost 3 years, but I will not apologize for the way I live. Thanks!! :hugs
NH, if I hadn't seen my sister in over three years (and I've been there, too), and she chose to cater to her whiney kids rather than come visit, I'd have to call it her loss.

Anyone ever use a steel shed for a chicken coop?
I wanted to add another coop and was on lowe's website picking out my lumber to buy online and pick up in store and they have a 10x8 steel shed for $300 which is less than my lumber.
I was going to attach it to my 15x20 foot run like my other coop is, leave the doors open all the time and put a vent on the back side for cross ventilation. It's under a tree so it will be partially shaded. With the doors open 24/7 and the vent you think it will still be okay to use in the summer?
I was going to put 2 10 foot roosts one down each side and build a loft to store my hay, feed & pine bedding.

Though my husband is gone for a month, so not sure how sucessful I will be alone. But we aren't permitted ANY contact on this mission, so I'm looking for a project to fill my time (as if my kids & house & garden isn't enough......)

Thoughts???
Dutch, i have a 10x14 metal shed that i got from Lowes. I divided the inside up so that it's about a 10x10 shed. I have a space 4x10 for storage and such. Seems to be working ok so far. I try to leave the doors open plus i cut out the spaces above the doors and on the opposite end. I put a fan on the end opposite the doors that is temp controlled. Seems to be working ok so far also. Hope this helps. I have 17 chickens in it and tey seem to be doing ok

Okay, thanks so much!
Have you used it through the summer yet?
I would assume if it's crazy hot in there, they're smart enough to walk out since the doors will always be open (at least I hope they are...)
I wanted to put a screen door on the opposite side as the main door so there is cross ventilation and I can walk in without having to walk through the run to get in the main door, but I can't figure out how I would attach the wooden frame to a screen door to the metal building?

Does anyone garden? {Yes, I know this is a forum about chickens -- But I think y'all are smart}

I have a major issue with slugs. I hate them. HATE THEM. Like skin crawling, screeching in fear, HATE THEM. I was picking some lettuce yesterday, and found one while I was outside in the garden. I carried the lettuce to the house to wash it and as it was soaking, there was ANOTHER mother blessin' slug IN MY SINK! I could handle a spider...but a slug? NO WAY!

I got online to read about it and it said to spread coffee grounds and crushed egg shells -- but I am not sure if there is enough coffee in this world... I don't want to attract them in, I want to kill them off.

HELP!!!

I remember that my dad would put beer in a lid and set that in the garden. They would go into it and that would be the end of them. I haven't tried it myself, I've never had a slug problem. It would be a cheap solution.

NH- I was raised to understand the meaning of hard work. Granted I didn't live on a working farm, but I still worked. My passion for animals was always my mother's way to motivate me. There were chores that I was expected to do, like clean my room, do my laundry, do the dishes when it was my turn. And chores that earned me money, like cutting grass, cleaning the bathroom, or scrubbing windows. If I wanted a new pet(hamster, gerbil, snake, turtle etc) I had to prove that I would take responsibility for them. I learned that working for what I want is much more satisfying then having it handed to me. And also taught me the value of a dollar. I started my first job at 15 and worked to save that money to buy myself things I need, like clothes, food for my pets, money spent on the town with friends. I was taught once I started my job that I couldn't ask for money. And I thank my mom, because I grew up faster than many friends my age and am know responsible and smart enough to run my own hobby farm.
