All this Olive Egger talk, yall are REALLY making me want one!!!!
My husband wants one too.
I want a SMALL flock this time, my original goal was 6, and he keeps adding to the list of birds he wants for MY flock!!!
He keeps telling me 20 is a good number for the pets! Until he deploys again and it's just me!

When I get my lavender americauna eggs I think I'm definitely going to have to add a dozen olive eggers now too!!!

If Coop Scoop Boogie does not have enough olive eggers for you, I have olive eggers and easter eggers. They are 5 week olds so they might be older than you want... Meg, I have been on the fence about buying POL chickens. Knowing how you are with biosecurity, I want some (4-5) of your Buff Orps if you have enough - I don't want to jump in front of anyone though!

Sometimes I think I have WAY too many chicks... then I remember how many other people have!
Oh, I am so jealous! I would love to have some Lavender Orpingtons. They are SO pretty!!
I don't know how far you are from me, but I have wayyyy more than I need!
Not quite 3 hours away. Are there any hatcheries/farms near you that have chicks as well? I am in need of chickens...the six I had disappeared :( which is a hazard of free ranging. I could make the trip but would really need somewhere else to get birds to make it worthwhile. Let me know how many you want to share and how much.
Are you looking for chicks only? I have a few POL hatchery Buff Orpingtons I was planning on taking to the auction. I usually get between $15-$20 for them at that stage. I would sell them direct at $15. I am close to dutchbunny.
I am not opposed to POL. I bought one at a sale in April in Lincolnton....she layed one in the car on the way home. I wanted chicks to make sure they were handled a lot and got used to people. I love Orpingtons! I might be able to take two.
I have enough for both of you if you want them. The youngest are 20 weeks old, so shouldn't be too long before you get eggs. Just let me know when you want them. This weekend all the Barnevelders go to auction. My niece is here and will help me get everything loaded and unloaded. Rather than have her wear boot covers at the auction like I do, I bought her a pair of flip-flops just for there. We'll toss them in a heavy bleach wash when we get back, and then she'll have them for such things. (Her mom keeps chickens, too. Don't want her tracking anything anywhere!) I took her to BHep's place today, since the girls got along well yesterday. I always a enjoy a visit with Beth!

Anyone live near the Sunset Beach area? I will be on vacation there starting the 6 th. I was hoping to find someone from BYC to possibly get some great eggs to eat while we are there. My chickens are not laying much right now due to half of them being broody. Please pm me if anyone might be able to help.
Thanks :)

Oh, I'm not offended. And I wasn't trying to knock anyone who sold their chicks for different prices, I was just saying what I see them sell for on average and what I've paid.
Ideal Poultry is $2.85 for small orders of sexed pullet Americaunas, 10 cents more a bird if you vaccinate.
They never even charge me shipping, just a $7 small box fee, which I guess goes to shipping?
An order of 10 Americaunas from them comes to less than $40 with them vaccinated and shipped so still under $4 a chicken. And you don't have to order 10, they have a $25 order minimum, no breed minimum which is why I like them. And all their birds are really healthy.
I'm the same way, my chickens are my pets. Haha I wish I could break even, mine are always a giant money pit, but they definitely are a lot of fun!
most hatcheries don't sell true amerucanas, they sell ee's. Now I read that a few are starting to sell true (by color standards) amerucanas, but the price was high! If I remember right it was over $10 per chick.

That's very true. Most hatcheries sell EEs. They'll call them Ameraucanas/Americanas/Araucanas, but they are EEs. Both Ameraucanas and Araucanas are standardized breeds. There's no such thing as Americanas; it's a bastardized spelling. And if they don'tmeet the standard for one of the breeds, then it's an EE.

I guess we need a time and a meeting place...any suggestions from those interested? I work in Greensboro M-F until 4:00. I know nothing about the Fayetteville area so I am relying on "the kindness of strangers" to pick a place. Do you raise Barnevelders too?

Good morning folks

I managed to get lots of things done yesterday
including mowing the rest of the lawn and it
didn't rain on me

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

Lizabelsherill, I am off for the summer, so any time works for me. CSB, dutchbunny, got a suggestion for a meeting place?

The Barnevelders are from eggs I got in a swap. I have changed my mind about keeping them, as I also have Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans. I don't need all the dark egg layers!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once some of my POL birds start laying, I'll also sell my remaining RIR pullets, as I have already decided not to breed them. I'll have to do a head count on the BO pullets to see on them. And then I'll have to trim down the cockerels. My BBS Ameraucanas first. I'm keeping one cockerel of each color, and will have several to go. After I finish with them, the Wellies might be old enough to make some choices. I'm growing out all my English Orps to at least a year old, though.

That'll keep me busy until Christmas! Not to mention slowly selling off all the mixed turkeys and surplus Royal Palms! But by next year I should be down to the breeds I want to work with.

I was all excited for the cicadas because I love to listen to them at night, then I found a map and they were to hatch no where near us. I guess that is what happened to you... It is so funny to mow and watch the chickens run after the mower to catch crickets, grasshoppers, etc. I love it. Good for you mowing the lawn... THAT should bring on labor LOL.

I knew the predator got one chicken but didn't realize it got all the babies, did you ever figure out what it was? That really stinks!

Pics to come this afternoon! Has anyone successfully treated splayed legs? One of my little guys has splayed legs. I am giving sav-a-chick and I am hoping that and food help but they are pretty bad. I am guessing that if I splint it needs to happen soon. Just wondering what the success rate is with splinting?
Figures I missed the cicadas too!! Sadly, the ONLY thing mowing the lawn did for me was give me heart failure when the blade took a HUGE chunk of grass/dirt and threw it back at me while making a "snapping" sound. Needless to say the Orchard and part of the front did NOT get finished! DH said the belt might have slipped/broken - he plans to check later. Of course the orchard is the bumpiest part of the yard and I am "sure" that would have sent me into labor...LOL

As for predator, we've narrowed it down to either a bobcat/fox/coyote - I have never seen a fox in our area (of course that doesn't mean they aren't here) but have HEARD the coyote and what I THINK is a bobcat, so that is quite possible. DH thinks it's probably a coyote only because of the lone footprint we saw out by the broody coop and the fact that it dug AT the coop door to get it open...still, it's uncertain. We've been locking the chickens/ducks up when we are not home and keeping the treat "bin" at the back deck, so they are hanging around close to the house rather than in the trees/woods...It's really the best we can do - for now! Our next big build will be a fence around the property and hot wire it - not sure if that would stop a coyote or bobcat, but again, it'll be our best solution. Thank you for your thoughts!!

I hope those of you that were in the path of the storms we were in managed to bust out your boats!! DH and I were building a playset (okay, I was watching...shhh!!) and called it a night about 20 minutes before the monsoon arrived. Of course we had come in to grab eggs and get our broody mama onto some eggs...what happens? While outside, the sky opens up and I ended up getting a shower (to say I was soaked in a matter of minutes is NO exaggeration). LOL. Today we (okay, he really) are finishing the playset (well...all that we can with missing pieces/parts) and going to a pig cooking tonight (unless a baby decides to show up?!?

) LOL.
Bring on the sunshine and good weather today!! Enjoy your Saturday everyone!!

Glad the rain held off this morning, I finished the coop/run just in time, we're leaving in a couple hours for 15 days!
The babies are loving it outside, fingers crossed everything goes smoothly the next couple of weeks!
Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!!!
