We got another egg this morning! Wooohooooo! Right up there in the nest boxes, she moves all the pine shavings to the side and lays it right on the wood! Crazy girl!

I left them on lockdown yesterday because I want them to know where to lay. They like to hang under the shade of the grapevines now, and anyone'd be crazy to think I am crawling under there looking for eggs!

Have a blessed Wednesday!

I still have some of my cornish crosses. They are very active and super sweet. I can't bare the thought of eating one of them. :( maybe you got a bad batch of them. I had more from a different place in the beginning an all they did was eat sleep and poop too...come to fun out the had coccidiosis and died about 2 weeks after I got them. But the ones I have now are about 7 months old and are the sweetest little birds! Maybe you should give them another try. Oh and mine aren't huge either like they are supposed to get and they are the most active ones I have!

Are you sure they are cornish crosses???
They don't usually live past 6-8 weeks I've never hear of them being 7 months...
Due to their genetics they start having joint failure and heart failure
They don't make it to egg laying age

A 7 month old cornishX would be huge and have a hard time getting around unless kept on a very restricted diet. I would bet that sbrooks88 does not have cornishX. Post a picture.

Hello and WELCOME to all the new folks!!
Adjusting to life with 3, 3 and under has been fun.  My 3 yo is my mini helper and my "mini-me" is having a rough adjustment "sharing" mommy with the new baby.  Despite all of this, we had 7 chicks hatch from under one of our broody hens (lol...the one sitting on duck eggs that drowned, we gave her chicken eggs, but she kicked the other mama off the nest and went back to sitting on new duck eggs?!?).  Should I be worried about the other broody?  By the time these duck eggs hatch, she will have been sitting for almost 2.5 months!!  We changed her feed (gave her the same feed as the chicks as well as scrambled eggs and such to give her added nutrients since she's just sitting) and give her treats as we can...is there anything else we should do?
I spent my morning feeding time reading the past gazillion posts...LOL boy you all talk a LOT!!  ;)
We are looking for some chickens in case anyone has some...we're looking for a pair that will be our main meat bird stock...I was thinking Jersey Giants because they are a dual purpose breed, but what would everyone else suggest?  We will be building a new coop specifically for the meat birds, but I'm not sure what breed to go with.  We thought about the Freedom Rangers, but I don't know if I want to deal with 25 chicks (along with the 7 we had hatch AND my own 3...LOL) and wait to sex them to see if we get a pair...then we'd either have to get an incubator or use someone else's incubator to hatch out more birds...I guess we're looking for suggestions!!  We use to just buy our chickens through our co-op (in addition to processing the extra roosters) but they switched farms and the chicken is no longer soy-free...poor DD1 was SO SICK from eating it, I didn't even THINK to look.  :hit   Anyway...suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Time for me to head on out.  Have a great day everyone!!

Freedom ranges are great. i'm raising afew now bought 25 and was able to quickly sell all but the 5 I kept. I made all the money back I spent on them when i sold them at 2 weeks old.
but if you're looking for dual purpose I'd suggest barred rock. you can sex them as chicks, and they don't take as long to grow up as the giants. most giants take over a year to get big enough. my friend feeds here BRs high protien and they are ready around 6 months. and the hens are good productive layers.

I LOVE barred rocks, they're my favorite chickens.
I could never use them as a meat bird though, they're way too personable! Though I've never had a rooster, just pullets/
They are great to have as pets and egg layers though.
From what I hear, dual purpose birds aren't really good as meat birds because there is less meat, but I don't know that from experience just what I've heard.
I am LOVING these freedom rangers, I will definitely be putting in another order.

Actually I got them from a lady in louisburg. I saw their mother hen who was very large and fat but her chicks I have now aren't. They are solid white and super sweet. I read the same thing and expected them to die very early but they are still alive and very healthy. Maybe they aren't but I know the hen that hatched them WAS
