Hi NC members. I'm in West Asheville.
awwwwww......hope he feels better real soon andI have not tried to raise out any Cornish X to breed, but I've also not lost any raising them out for meat.
The Cornish Rock is a Cornish cross too, by the way. Cornish X Plymouth Rock. But when they say Cornish X, they just aren't designating what the other half is.
You could always get pure Cornish and create your own crosses with whatever you want/have. I have considered it. The Cornish are interesting looking birds. But after trying the Cornish X from a couple different hatcheries, we've decided we like the ones from McMurray best. They aren't quite the slugs that the ones we've gotten from elsewhere are, but they still grew nicely. I'm not sure I want to maintain another breed just to create my own meat crosses when we've found a line we like.
If I thought the zombie apocalypse was imminent, I might change my mind, but I doubt it. Under those circumstances, I'd want dual purpose birds that can free-range and forage for a good part of their food during the warm months. And I'd be wishing forage was available in the winter, too!
I'm staying up tonight with a sick puppy. He's been vomiting, and judging by the loud churning sounds coming from his gut, he will commence with large quantities of projectile diarrhea about five minutes after I go to sleep. So I'm not going. I'm going to keep walking him frequently until either his guts shut up or they appear empty. Sick puppy is already almost 140 pounds! That's a lot of potential disaster zone. Cross your toes for me!
I'm in Lexington, NC anyone nearby?
