Anyone have experience with Blue Isbars?
They're really pretty birds.
Aren't the best layers, but they lay really pretty green to olive green eggs.
Straight run chicks seem to be going for $30+ a piece and I'm sure there is a minimum. There are some breeders that sell hatching eggs, and I like hatching them myself.
The breed seems to be pretty hard to come by (though not as hard as my new chicken obsession ayam cemani's!)
Hatching eggs are pretty expensive, but still feasible (mostly because my husband has no idea what I spend on chickens haha!).
Just wondering if anyone had them and would recommend them? I'm about to search for a thread of them on here.

One last thing...any canners out there?? I'm looking for a recipe to make a SMALL batch of pickles (I can't touch them and DH only eats them on his burgers) but all the ones I have call for TONS of cucumbers, etc... I apologize for my brain being all over the place - I blame it on lack of sleep and...lack of sleep! LOL
Have a great day everyone!!
Ooh, ooh, I can answer this one! I, too, only eat pickles in small doses. I went to get the Ball Flex Batch mix (http://www.freshpreserving.com/products/pickling.aspx) but Walmart only had Mrs. Wages (http://store.mrswagesstore.com/pickles.html). What a happy accident! I loved the results. Even though the Mrs. Wages only came in envelopes, it was easy to cut the ingredients (cucumbers, sugar, vinegar, and mix for B&B pickles, cucumbers, vinegar, water, and mix for Dill pickles) in half. Even if I don't use the other half of the packages, I still got nine jars of homemade pickles - that taste fabulous - for less than two or three jars from the grocery store.

NH, take your list of breeds you like that are kid-compatible, find pics of roos of each one, then offer them to hubby to choose from. He chooses, and you don't have to.
Just thought you'd like to know I showed DH the list of birds along with a photo of a typical (I tried to find ones that weren't SQ photos, but more backyard ones) rooster for each one. Seems like he prefers a few over the others (BOO...I was hoping a "let's get them all" response...hehe)

Our condensed/updated list: Wyandotts are on the top of the list as DH liked the look as well as the "write up" about them followed closely by the Faverolles then Australorp and Orpington. I don't know ANYTHING about Welsummers, but he liked the look of the roosters so that is also on our list. Does anyone have any experience with ROOSTERS from this list being docile or mean? I know there is always the exception to the rule, but I was just curious. If anyone has a rooster from one of these breeds, let me know!!

I have an 11 week old silver laced wyandotte cockerel. He is very mellow and sweet. I'd be willing to send him with his buddy, a silver spangled hamburg cockerel of the same age.

I have had an orpington rooster, after about 1 1/2 yrs old he started to get mean, I have had to deal with a few jersey giants and australorps roosters, all of which where great. Come to think of it a jersey giant comes in black, blue which means splash and in white. They are a very clam bird and big

Yes! I've got Isbars. I've got a splash hen and 3 cockerels - a blue, a black and a splash. My pullet has been laying for about 5 weeks now but I haven't put her in with a cockerel to get fertile eggs yet. The cockerels are pretty feisty but the pullet has come around now that she is laying. She is still not the friendliest but she doesn't avoid me any longer. I hatched them out from shipped eggs. They have been very healthy and are certainly beautiful. She lays a mossy green colored egg that sometimes has speckles. She is a sneaker and will try her best to roost in a tree beside our house at night. I have to make sure she goes in the coop or she will go to that tree in a heartbeat.
