Sundays chick hatched out yesterday, my first solid black. I could hear that one making popping noises since Sat. I saw a pip yesterday morning and tapped on the egg and it peeped so loudly, came home from work and there it was. The other five eggs I don't hear anything but I also didn't hear anything out of the first three either. How long after hatch day should you keep the eggs. Being I had a late one I hate to give up on them to soon. Here are some pictures of the first four.

I bought a pullet from Murray McMurray in Jan of this year and She is absolutely beautiful! I have a silver and white. Both are beautiful and their head feathers are gorgeous! I will see if I can get a pic this afternoon.
Good luck!

2Strayroos, I leave them till the hen leaves them. She may get up for a bit with the other chicks to eat or drink, but will probably come back to the eggs for a little bit.

Thats what I'll do. So far she still sits on them, tucks them undereath her. I move them in the nesting area at night with her and the babies and back in the play area in the morning. See what happens the rest of this week. Five out of ten is not bad. First time for her and me.

Good morning everyone.. still looking for a home for a Turken[Naked Neck] Rooster, This is a rare breed and cannot live at our church  with heavy road work heading that way. He is in Burnsville, and I will get him for you. He looks to be in good health other than he's molting but so are mine this time of year.

Kangadoodle was looking for one i believe

How do you ferment feed? I have heard several people talk about it, but not really ever figured out how to do it.

I went to let everyone out this morning, and I have 3 fluffies and a pip under my broody! I am so excited! They are out of my Buff Cochin Rooster and a Buff cochin hen that the dogs killed a couple of weeks ago, so it is nice to have the bloodline continued.

Here is a picture of my rooster that was killed. The hen in the background was also killed and is actually the mama to the chicks. The hen that is sitting had actually quit laying by the time I put eggs under her.

On another note: Is there anyone near Surry county that has BC Marans or Welsemmers? I am wanting to add some dark layers to my flock. I would also like some EE's.

I stick my feed in a bucket with enough water to get it all wet and let it sit with a old junky t-shirt on top (to keep the flies out) I started to give it to my chickens the next day, put it takes a little time to ferment. You will know it is fermented by the smell and the white slime on the top. Just stir it back in. It is a pretty stupid proof method thank God! I like simple! I stir it up in the mornings feed them too big scoop fulls in a spackling trough and they "lick" it clean by evening. You can use whole grains or whatever bagged feed you buy or a mixture of both.

The top one looks like a silkie from what I can see (see the blue ears?) Looks like a buff partridge. Would love to see the whole chick!

It does look like partridge pattern, though the feathers growing in didn't really look like silkie to me. I don't know. The only foot you can see doesn't appear to be feathered either. Mix maybe?
The one has a big poof on the head and the other doesn't seem to have one at all.
Either way, whatever it is, I want one!!! haha
