Hello from Greenville! I'm a new chicken mama who started with Barred Rock babies for Mother's Day and had a terrible raccoon predation. He got THEM ALL! Now I lock my coop down at sunset like Fort Knox and leave nothing to chance. I obsessively check the latches every night. I may be crazed but I've had no more coon killings.
A good friend replaced my sweet BRs with four laying hens who I've managed to tame enough to be able to feed a couple scratch out of my hand, but they're not the same as hand-raised babies so I'm hatching some Buff Orpingtons in my Brinsea Mini. I have three that made it to lockdown. I am not supposed to have more than 4 hens in town where I live, and no roosters, so if I get cockerels out of this hatch (hope I get some babies at all) I will be offering them to this group. Hopefully, hopefully at least 2 will hatch. They will be nice breeder Buffs and I guarantee they'll be spoiled and sweet.
I figure I can squeeze a few more hens in the yard. I have learned so much from this site and hope to have baby pictures to post by the weekend! Fingers crossed!!!!
Glad to have you join us
good luck on the hatchMorning everyone!! Beautiful day today , i was wondering if my fellow North Carolina BYCers could help me out. So far we only have two mature breeds at KBHatchery , Pearl White Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds. The Barred Rocks are only one week old as of last friday and im in need of one more breed to fill the empty coop and run. If yall would kindly give me some suggestions on what that final breed could be please pm or quote this postIm looking for what breed is in High demand or just all around most popular amongst poultry lovers in NC. But no bantams please. Your input would be greatly appreciated

Hello. I just got my chickens in June. I have posted a couple of times but never introduced myself. I live in Surry county. I recently lost half my flock to a neighbor's dog. I have 7 golden comets, an austrolope rooster and two mystery chicks left. I also have a cochin bantam that is sitting and has hatched two chicks so far. I also picked up two older blue laced red wyahdottes yesterday.
Happy Tuesday! We are one day closer to the weekend and some cooler weather. I just wish we could have the cooler weather with longer days....I am not liking the fact that our days are getting shorter. It reminds me that I desperately need a lighting solution for the coop. It's too hard to feed in the mornings with a flashlight in hand.![]()
Have a marvelous day!
