Hello from Greenville! I'm a new chicken mama who started with Barred Rock babies for Mother's Day and had a terrible raccoon predation. He got THEM ALL! Now I lock my coop down at sunset like Fort Knox and leave nothing to chance. I obsessively check the latches every night. I may be crazed but I've had no more coon killings.
A good friend replaced my sweet BRs with four laying hens who I've managed to tame enough to be able to feed a couple scratch out of my hand, but they're not the same as hand-raised babies so I'm hatching some Buff Orpingtons in my Brinsea Mini. I have three that made it to lockdown. I am not supposed to have more than 4 hens in town where I live, and no roosters, so if I get cockerels out of this hatch (hope I get some babies at all) I will be offering them to this group. Hopefully, hopefully at least 2 will hatch. They will be nice breeder Buffs and I guarantee they'll be spoiled and sweet.
I figure I can squeeze a few more hens in the yard. I have learned so much from this site and hope to have baby pictures to post by the weekend! Fingers crossed!!!!

Hello. I just got my chickens in June. I have posted a couple of times but never introduced myself. I live in Surry county. I recently lost half my flock to a neighbor's dog. I have 7 golden comets, an austrolope rooster and two mystery chicks left. I also have a cochin bantam that is sitting and has hatched two chicks so far. I also picked up two older blue laced red wyahdottes yesterday.

Morning everyone!! Beautiful day today , i was wondering if my fellow North Carolina BYCers could help me out. So far we only have two mature breeds at KBHatchery , Pearl White Leghorns and Rhode Island Reds. The Barred Rocks are only one week old as of last friday and im in need of one more breed to fill the empty coop and run. If yall would kindly give me some suggestions on what that final breed could be please pm or quote this post :) Im looking for what breed is in High demand or just all around most popular amongst poultry lovers in NC. But no bantams please. Your input would be greatly appreciated :)

Thank You
Cody @ KBHatchery

IMH(& little experienced)O; No matter what breed that's in high demand, if you breed for health and longevity you will have great sales.
Since we got that covered, I'm thinking along the lines of heritage breeds, especially those that are threatened or listed as critical. That would be a "high demand" in my book. I don't really go with what's popular, I just want to find a breed I will enjoy raising (like leghorns!) & share that passion with those looking to buy chickens. Just my inexperienced, non-biz opinion :)

 The dog owner needs to reimburse you $$$ for the livestock loss. Hope that doesn't become a repeat issue. Two of our dogs have been chasing again, so back on their cables they go.......

welcome to the new members......glad to meet you

we have been lucky so far an not had any bad predator
attacks. The worst one was a predator of the two legged
variety and that taught us not to free range the birds and
to use padlocks on the coops. We also keep large dogs
to encourage folks not to trespass.......works for us

hope everyone has a good day

Happy Tuesday! We are one day closer to the weekend and some cooler weather. I just wish we could have the cooler weather with longer days....I am not liking the fact that our days are getting shorter. It reminds me that I desperately need a lighting solution for the coop. It's too hard to feed in the mornings with a flashlight in hand.

Have a marvelous day!

I have noticed since owning chickens that I am so much more aware of when sun up and sun down is. I have a undercabinet light installed in my coop with an extension cord running to the coop. but mine is not far from my house. A fan & light are on a timer that comes on at 6 am & goes off at 9 pm.
