I am so, so heartbroken. A stray or neighbors dog (not sure since we did not get a close view of it) killed the overwhelming majority of my flock today. At first we could not find any then found 3 alive in the woods. I did have 23. :( My silkie and my favorite are gone. I cannot find any signs of 5 of them. I was going to give up on keeping chickens but decided that wouldn't be fair to the ones that made it especially after what they have been though. I am going to further preditor proof my coop. I am practically starting over. This is so hard.

I'm so sorry! I've been there too, with strays killing off a large portion of my birds. And mine happened because I forgot to lock up, so guilt on top of it. Recently, I've been selling off my turkeys because my own puppy has been killing them if they come in the yard. Had to choose my dogs over the turkeys, but it's hard. Hope your missing birds show up.

(Still have five Royal Palms left!)

If my hen were possibly egg bound where should I feel the egg inside her? I feel something hard just past the end of her sternum but I'm unsure if they all have tht because the rest of mine are very plump and she's very thin even though she eats more than the rest. She acts fine. Doesn't act ill or sick. And is still a very cheery hen. Mind you this is one that hasn't laid yet even though she's going on 8 months now.

Thank you so much for the kind messages and letting me share my heartbreak with people who understand. Of my 23 girls, I have 5 living (two of which are sebrights so they do not really count as full chickens), 15 dead bodies, and 3 missing. It has been over 24 hours. How long should I keep hope that the missing might be alive and come back?

Just gotta say I will never order from Meyer again. I have been brooding 40 chicks, 15 of them are my own. I am brooding the same way I always do, and have always had great success. In the last week the Meyer babies have been dropping like flies :hit I seem to find one or two passed everyday. I've tried electrolytes, sulmet, medicated feed, extra protien. Nothing! they still get weak and die!!!! :he :hit My babies from my own birds, are big and strong and doing great, but the meyer babies are doing horrible!! I'm so depressed.

Don't give up for awhile on them, they (if alive) are stressed and scared. If you did a feed call go around shaking the feed container and using the feed call every day. Go in the woods if you are by woods, look in dark small places. Good luck

Hi from Wake County. New to chickens & the site. Currently have 3 Mille Fleur d'Uccle's that hatched Sept 4th. Never thought I'd have chickens but they're amazing!
