Lost three chickens today. Plus one in intensive care now. Stupid dogs from across the street came today and went into my coop and got them. I'd left it open because there were no dogs out and the chickens were all huddled up in the coop because they were cold. My dogs and the one that was in the picture earlier this week weren't out. Worst part is they did it right in front of my two and four year old kids. They seem to have recovered, but I haven't. No more free ranging around here. Those a-hole dogs are NEVER over here, but of course the one time I leave the chickens unlocked unattended....

I think my brahma baby will pull through, but way too soon to tell. Looks like they just ripped her tail off, skin and all. She's got a pretty good sized open wound, but doesn't look like it's more than skin deep. Any treatment tips are welcome.

Anyway, sad day around here. Hope you all fared better.

inlaws are in town too. They bought the boys some more chicks. So now I have 7 Orpington chicks brooding in the bathroom, and my brahma in the shower.

You could try some honey and baking powder or you could try Nustock.....

I am so, so sorry. Your neighbors need to reimburse you for your losses. Personally, I would dispose of the dogs, particularly if this is not the first offense. Your animals have the right to be our on your property without threat from neighbor dogs.

Do your chickies have an enclosed run?

Obviously, separate her our. Clean the wound. Keep her in a quiet, dark place and as immobile as you can. (I still have one in a box in the office.) I always use Blu Kote to disguise the wound when turning out and if they pick at it. It's an antifungal and antiseptic spray, and I've had good luck with it. If the wound is gaping, I'd clean it real well, give it a day and then glue the edges back together. I've known some who stitched a chicken back together using cotton thread, fwiw.

It really really stinks to lose a chicken, bjt especially to dogs.

Thanks! Here's a pic of the wound. Sorry it's graphic.

Separate her, clip the feathers arount the wound so that you can see the borders of the wound. Clean it with some betadine or chlorhexidine diluted in warm water (be gentle though, just wet a clean wash cloth and then squeeze the betadine over the wound to flush it well). Then slather it with an antibiotic ointment. She should be fine to go outside by next weekend.

Thanks for all the help guys. :) She seems to be doing pretty good considering. She's eating and drinking and pooping well. All signs look hopeful. She is not happy about being confined to my shower though.

Tomorrow I get to go talk to the neighbors. Yay. :/

That should heal just fine.

She seems to be doing pretty well. Looked a lot worse at first, but now that all the shock has worn off from the massacre and wailing toddler and preschooler things are looking better. Wonder if she'll ever have tail feathers again? I'm guessing no? After all of this, I'm discovering that being called a chicken is actually a complement. They are pretty dang resilient critters.

The new chicks the in-laws brought home are doing well too. :) Although, I think two of the seven are boys but a tad early to say for sure. The store was REALLY trying to get rid of them though so they gave one away for free if we took all seven. Hopefully I can keep these ones alive at least until they reach POL. These are going to be the most expensive eggs I've ever eaten. :(

Thanks again for all the support! You guys rock!
